A former Nelson County track coach has admitted he had sex with a 16-year-old girl.
Richard Seely Noles, 23, pleaded guilty Tuesday to taking indecent liberties with a child by a person in a custodial or supervisory relationship. Circuit Judge Paul M. Peatross Jr. accepted Noles’ plea, which was made as part of a plea agreement in Charlottesville Circuit Court.
Noles, who lives in the city, said in court he was pleading guilty in his “best interests.”
Noles was a coach for Nelson County High School and a special education teacher during the 2008-09 school year. Elizabeth Killeen, assistant commonwealth’s attorney, said in court that Noles formed a friendship with a then-16-year-old student, striking up a social relationship that included late-night phone calls.
It was not clear if Noles was the girl’s teacher or coach. Killeen said in court that the girl came over to Noles’ Charlottesville apartment, where they had sex.
Noles resigned from the school in February after being charged with computer solicitation of a juvenile in Nelson. Authorities haven’t said if the victim in the Nelson case is the same as the one in the city case. Noles is scheduled to have a preliminary hearing Oct. 22 in Nelson’s Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court.
Under the plea agreement in Charlottesville, a second count of indecent liberties won’t be prosecuted and there is no agreement as to the sentence. Noles will face up to five years in prison when he is sentenced April 7.
Defense attorney John Luxton said in court that Noles didn’t have a criminal record before this incident and had been cooperative with police. After court, Luxton said his client was a “nice kid” who got himself into a “bewildering, sad situation.”
Noles remains out on bond.

Given that you find it to be ignorance on the part of locals who find fault with a grown man having sex with minors, perhaps you should go back to Ohio where that is not considered to be in poor taste. Cheers…
I live in Ohio and here 16 is the age of sexual consent. If this had happened here the sex wouldn’t be an issue.
Having said that, I know this guy and anyone who says he should get the maximum sentence is just ignorant. There’s a lot more to every situation than what the news can say in a few short paragraphs.
Gotta be a repressed Baptist!
Gosh, I wonder what church he goes to.
Imprimis… we have finally found common ground. This guy needs to be locked up for the maximum sentence.
Not saying I accept it. I just won’t vilify someone. Treatment is an option.
If he is, in fact, “powerless” over his “lust and sexual urges” to the point that he is “forced” by these lusts to have sex with children ....
Then he either needs to be locked up forever or castrated. IF this sort of “addiction” truly is what’s happening, then you’re right; “get a clue” isn’t appropriate. “Get cut” is.
Otherwise no one’s children will be safe, including mine and yours. And I won’t accept that. I would hope you wouldn’t either.
Easy to say “GET A CLUE.“ Much like an alcoholic being powerless over alcohol, a sex addict is powerless over lust and sexual urges.
Who knows why Noles or anyone does what they do. They are wrong, dead wrong. Do they need to fact consequences, you betcha. Can I judge him, nope. I can only see the real sadness in the whole situation for everyone.
What is WITH these guys that can’t keep their pants zipped?
They ruin their lives having sex with children, they run the risk of getting AIDS and dying, they father children they can’t support ...
What are they, deer in rut? No better than dogs, who can only think with their lower glands?
We’re human. We can make the decision to find one person and be faithful to them. No AIDS, no jail, no unsupported children.
GET A CLUE!
He should have known better, I know he is young, but he applied for the job at a High School and accpeted the job so he knew very well that this behaivor was wrong and he should be PUNISHED for his actions. Having sex with a MINOR is a very serious charge. While I hate to see young peoples ruin their lifes, I think they should make an example of him.
