Four Brookneal residents vie for council seats

Four Brookneal residents are vying for three town council seats in the Nov. 4 general election. Current Mayor Phyllis Campbell faces no opposition in her quest for another term. Here’s a look at the candidates.

Mayor

Phyllis L. Campbell (I)
- Age: 60

- Occupation: homemaker and mayor.

- Family: married with five grown children and one grandchild.

- Experience: mayor for six years and on town council for four years.

- Why she is running: “I’m running to complete the work I had started with the grants. ... It has been my dream to see downtown revitalized and I’m hoping to see that through.”

Town Council

Richard T. Adams Jr. (I)
- Age: 58

- Occupation: vice president of finance for Adams Lumber Co.

- Family: married with one child.

- Experience: four years as Town Council member.

- Why he is running: “I’d like to see us continue working through some of the programs we have started in the last four years.” Some of those include replacing and improving the town water and sewer systems and the downtown revitilization program, Adams said.

Stacey L. Hailey (I)
- Age: 36

- Occupation: postal worker.

- Family: separated.

- Experience: four years on Town Council.

- Why he is running: “I’m running for re-election because I want to see the town of Brookneal to be better off in the future.”

James A. “Champ” Nowlin (I)
- Age: 61

- Occupation: retired.

- Family: married with two children and three grandchildren.

- Experience: 16 years on Brookneal Town Council.

- Why he is running: “I’m running because I want to still do what I can do to help this down and there are different things that we are in the process of doing.”

Phillip B. Sheppard
- Age: 46

- Occupation: self-employed.

- Family: married with three children.

- Experience: “New to the game. I just have some ideas.”

- Why he is running: “I’d like to see a change to come to Brookneal.”
