Ivy Lake in Forest donated to Liberty University

The donation of Ivy Lake in Forest to Liberty University was finalized Tuesday as the centerpiece of several recent land and monetary gifts to the college totaling more than $5 million.

“It’s exciting for Liberty University,” Chancellor Jerry Falwell Jr. said after the school announced its acquisition of the roughly 115-acre, man-made lake Tuesday. “It’ll be a recruiting tool for us and a recreational opportunity for students. So we’re thrilled about the gift, and we deeply appreciate the generosity of the donors.”

Tom DeWitt, a Liberty alumnus and local land developer, bought the lake and other property in the surrounding Ivy Hill development in 2000 with partners Terry Dobyns and Richard Chaffin.

They had attempted to sell the lake to homeowners, DeWitt said Tuesday, but that deal was never finalized.

“Liberty is a great user for it because they’ll take care of the maintenance if anything ever arises; they have the resources to take care of it,” he said. “I think it’ll be a real good thing.”

Falwell said he plans to continue allowing residents to access the lake as usual.

“We’ll continue to do whatever (the previous owners) were doing,” he said. “We don’t want to upset anybody.”

Bob Bashore, an Ivy Hill resident who is on the board of the Ivy Lake Preservation Corporation, said Tuesday he and other members of the corporation had hoped to gain ownership of the lake. Bashore is a former county supervisor.

“That just kept bouncing around and didn’t get anywhere,” he said. “So I guess rather than giving it to us, they get a tax write off.”

He said the group had planned to keep up with the lake’s maintenance needs. Bashore also worried whether Liberty’s use of the lake would impede its use by residents in any way.

“It was built for the residents,” he said.

Valued at an estimated $2.5 million, the donation of about 125 acres includes the lake, Ivy Creek dam and spillway and a parking lot area with a boat ramp, DeWitt said.

Powerboats are not allowed on the lake, he said, but residents often use it for boating with a battery-operated or trolling motor, and fishing.

“Some of the people out there tell me it’s one of the best fishing lakes around,” he said.

Falwell said students could use the property for fishing, sailing and picnicking, or possibly forming a club crew team. The lake is about a 15-minute drive from LU’s main campus in Lynchburg.

Steve Arrington, chairman of the Bedford County Board of Supervisors, said he was happy to hear the news Tuesday.

“It does take me by surprise but that’s wonderful,” he said. “I’ve been a longtime supporter of Liberty and its mission statement, and I think it’s great.”

“The community has given a lot, and LU has given a lot back.”

Falwell said the university previously had hoped to expand its roughly six-acre Camp Hydaway Lake in Campbell County to 125 acres.

“We found that (with) the new state laws protecting wetlands and streams that it would have cost us about $16 million just in stream and wetland mitigation,” he said. “We had kind of given up on that idea, and this just came up out of the blue.”

Several others also have given to the school recently.

Local developer Bob Hughes recently donated a commercial lot adjacent to Applebee’s on Candlers Mountain Road worth about $1 million, Falwell said.

Across from that site sits another 6.5-acre lot valued at more than $700,000 that alumnus Glen Thomas recently donated.

Thomas also donated an additional $700,000 for the university’s new indoor soccer field, which currently is under construction.

Thomas and Iris Tilley, the parents of Falwell’s wife, Becki, recently donated $250,000 for the construction of the Tilley Student Center.

Jerry Falwell Jr. said many alumni are just reaching the age where they can afford to donate to the college, which paid off its final debts and started building an endowment in the past year.

“We’re excited about surviving long enough to see that day,” he said. “That’s a healthy sign for any college.”

Maggie, do you know me? Do you know what I do for fun? Or where I go? And what the hell does France have to do with anything? It sounds like you should have stopped your clubbing a few hours before you started typing.

Regarding LU trying to buy Cattle Annies, I just meant THEY DONT HAVE TO SELL. Im sure they would welcome a sale due to the fact that the place is only about 1/3 full every time Ive been there unless its a big name country star, which they hardly ever have! Oh yes, Im old enough to go there, in fact I was country when country wasnt cool and two stepping and boot scooting was cool either, but it sure was FUN. You stuff shirts should try it some time . Oh I forget, its a red neck thing.Im sure they dont do any of that in F R A N C E.
I would still be dancing if there was anywhere around here to dance!!!!

Maggie, I’m not going to get into a debate about how good or evil the Falwells are, but one paragraph in your last post caught my eye.

First, “Who would notice if Cattle Annies did close. It is the most boring non entertainment place Ive ever known.“ So the criterion for a business to stay open is that YOU not find it boring? If you think it’s a fun place, it’s OK for them to stay in business but if it bores you, the owners should give up and sell out to the Falwells?

Second, “If a night club does not want to be bothered with someone wanting to buy their property, then build somewhere out in one of the counties.“ There is not one part of that sentence that makes any sense at all.

The owners of a business are entitled to keep that business open as long as they wish to and are able; they have no obligation to sell to anyone. I’m sure they’re not “bothered” by the Falwells wishing to buy their property, but they have every right not to sell to them. They also have every right to stay where they are, rather than “somewhere out in one of the counties.“

Your post makes me wonder if you’re even old enough to go to a nightclub.

Rather than tell you, you just don’t get it, i will explain.
A sign or symbol that all are welcome and none will be hated be you straight or gay, black, white, yellow, religious, from the darkside, vegan or cosmo and fred has NOTHING to do with a desire for money.
If you would not enter because of this symbol, i am sorry for you.

Truthfully, I find the early Falwell stories right interesting.  As to running liquor, during Prohibition many, many people did the same as the Falwells.  Also, I’ve heard stories about Jerry’s father killing his brother.  One who was there as his brother was dieing told how his brother confessed he had killed several people himself.  If you want to really see the Falwell history, go to the Falwell Museum at LU.  It is not a museum of religion but of Lynchburg history.  There you can see how many businesses were started with the bootleg money.  At least they put it into something substantial.  As to the other stories you heard, that was way before Jerry’s time.

What most of you can’t stand is the success of TRBC and LU. Jealousy???

And, Damalama, I don’t know of any other stores in Lynchburg that have signs in their windows referencing gays.  Does that add to your sales or take away from them?  I would say the latter.  I know I wouldn’t enter a store with a sign like that.  You want the gays to be included in everything, so why single them out with a sign?  For the $$$$ I assume.

For damalama: Jerry Falwell did a lot of good things to help people in this area. For you to say the Falwells are a
horrible bunch is just showing what a
freak you are. Im not a member of TRBC
but I have known the Falwells since I was a small child, obviously you know
nothing about them. I dont agree with a lot of things they say and do, but I have to give credit where it is due.TRBC and LU has done a lot to help
Lynchburg thrive.
Who would notice if Cattle Annies did close. It is the most boring non entertainment place Ive ever known. If a night club does not want to be bothered with someone wanting to buy their property, then build somewhere out in one of the counties.
Also, LU cant help who donates and what they donate. Do you think they should turn down these donations?
I know Im rambling- just touching on a few things that have been discussed. .
And yes, I know my postings are just at boring and all the rest. Blah BLah
Blah…same old speeches..different day

bashlibertyu…you don’t see LC or RC out there trying to buy up all the property in Lynchburg, selling it to retailers and making tons of money on it do you?  you don’t see those schools active out there influencing and trying to get involved in politics?
that is what i was saying i am aware the other schools are private however they stay in line with what is required of private schools.
oh and i forgot to add cockfighting, dogfighting, sleezy nightclub, and murdering you brother to the beginning of the falwell empire.

I also have said many times in this forum that the one time i actually wrote to the paper and used my name, i ended up on the flamesfans site with my home phone #. These people are powerful and scary, i’m sure in my bones there is a list..
Yet my heart and soul hung my pro gay sign at my business anyway….we are all gods children

gotta get back to work, and no megalowmart does not compete with me.

Dalama,

You have shown the world you have no understanding of tax law.  Secular or Christian, RC, LC, and LU are all tax exempt.

I think you should show up to the next city council meeting and make these claims publically and demand action!

I am sure the propagation of booze in the city is the answer to all our problems.
