New Lynchburg School Board members make debut tonight
Lynchburg School Board will meet for the first time today with its two new members, and will conduct its annual reorganization.
The board reorganizes in July, when new members attend their inaugural meeting, by electing a new chairperson and vice chairperson. They also set a meeting schedule for the year, appoint a clerk and deputy clerk of the school board and select representatives for other area boards.
For the first time since 2004, the school board will elect a new chairperson. Former board chairwoman Julie Doyle was not eligible for reappointment because she had served the maximum number of terms.
Board newcomer Charlie White, a Lynchburg native and local business owner, replaces Doyle on the board. Loan mortgage officer Ingrid Hamlett, who is the board’s other new member, replaces longtime board member Leslie Faircloth. Faircloth, who served two terms, chose not to seek reappointment.
After the reorganization, board members are slated to discuss amending the division’s uniform policy. According to agenda materials, board members are expected to approve a change requiring students attending the new Fort Hill Community School to wear uniforms.
If the change is approved, students will wear a long or short sleeve blue polo shirt and khaki pants or a skirt.
The uniform policy will not apply to students receiving homebound services at the school.
The board is also scheduled to discuss approving proposed expenditures for federal stimulus funds.

Welcome Mr White and Ms Hamlett. Best of luck. But be prepared for some serious, important questions from some of our more intelligent citizens… (all that uniform stuff is just a warmup act.) What they really want to know is:
Are you an evolutionist, and will you allow Intelligent Design to be taught alongside all that Godless science stuff?
Best of luck. You’ll need it, I’m afraid.
