Percival’s Island bridge to be closed starting Monday
Published: July 2, 2009
Beginning Monday, the public will not be able to access Percival’s Island from Lynchburg on weekdays due to a bridge repair project.
Crews will replace warped floorboards on the pedestrian bridge that connects the city to Percival’s Island and the RiverWalk trail. The bridge will also be coated with a waterproof stain.
All work is scheduled to begin Monday and end around July 25. In the intervening weeks, people will not be able to access the bridge on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Percival’s Island will still be fully accessible from Amherst County. The Lynchburg connection will be open both before and after the designated construction time; it will also be open on weekends.
This project represents the first significant repairs to the Percival’s Island bridge since the current structure was put in place about nine years ago. The public is asked to obey signage and exercise caution in the construction area.
The repair contract was awarded to Smith-Wimer Inc. of Lynchburg for $44,464. That fee also includes pending repairs to a pedestrian bridge in Peaks View Park.
