Repairs to close city footbridge

The footbridge to Percival’s Island will be closed next week while repairs are made to its deck.

The city says the bridge will be closed from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. It will be reopened to pedestrians and bicyclists during the early morning and evening hours.

Only the Lynchburg bridge will be affected. Percival’s Island, part of the RiverWalk trail system, will remain fully accessible from its Amherst County entrance.

Trail users are asked to obey signage and use caution near the construction area. Crews are replacing warped floorboards, as well as applying a fresh coat of sealant.

The Parks & Recreation Department said that work, which began in July, should be completed next week.

Many of the foot bridges on the trail system need maintenance and the truth is that the one to Percival’s Island is probably in the best shape. If you walk the trail that runs across Ivy Creek and continues along the peninsula between Blackwater and Ivy there are two rickety suspension bridges that are getting a little scary.
