Tax day ‘tea party’ planned in Lynchburg
Two Liberty University law students plan to celebrate tax day on April 15 with a re-enactment of the Boston Tea Party on Lynchburg’s riverfront.
Brendan McIntyre and Ray Coble have lined up several politicians, including former Fifth District Rep. Virgil Goode, to deliver anti-tax speeches at 6 p.m. at the base of Ninth Street near The Depot Grille and Amazement Square.
Re-enactors dressed in Colonial-era knickers and headdresses made of turkey feathers plan to make the ceremonial tea dump, although “that is not our primary focus,” McIntyre said.
The event is targeted at “the tax burden and irresponsible governing that is going on with the bailout and stimulus and pork spending and earmarks,” McIntyre said.
McIntyre said he and Coble started organizing the tea party/tax protest about a month ago after finding the concept on a Web site for the National Tax Day Tea Party at http://taxdayteaparty.com.
Speakers who McIntyre said are confirmed to appear include Goode, state Sen. Steve Newman, R-Lynchburg, and City Council members Scott Garrett and Jeff Helgeson. Both Garrett and Helgeson are seeking the Republican nomination to run for the House of Delegates in Lynchburg.
Also speaking, McIntyre said, will be radio commentator George Caylor of Lynchburg. In addition, two local business owners are expected to talk about the tax impacts on their operations.
The costumes and tea party are intended to dramatize its theme.
“There will be real tea going into the water,” but probably not too much of it, said McIntyre, a third-year law student who calls Lynchburg home now. He is a native of Buffalo, N.Y.
“We talked to DEQ” (the state Department of Environmental Quality) about the plans to introduce tea into the river, McIntyre said.
“The statute is pretty clear. As long as there is no damage, a small quantity is OK.”

I wonder what The News and Advance is going to do about stating that the “Tea Party” starts at 6pm,when it really starts at 5pm! This misinformation could cause fewer people to attend. I certainly hope that this mistake, is truly a mistake, and not an attempt to derail this, peaceful protest!
I am rather skeptical of the impact of these rallies. While popular, there is no plan of action for where to go after April 15th. Also, lets not forget that Republicans (not the ones invited) are to blame too for the out-of-control govt that we are now burdened with.
If the socialists in the WH aren’t bothered by falling poll numbers and growing opposition to their mind-numbing spending, then this won’t even be cause for concern. Our Democrat governor has spent the past 4 years campaigning for Obama and trying to increase taxes and regulations on Virginians. Locally, Democrats are no better and very irresponsible with the taxpayers dollars. If there were ever a time for Americans to come together and not only limit govt but cut it, that time is now.
Yes, I believe hijacked is appropriate to describe a narrow victory earned primarily with uniformed first-time voters who fell prey to the misrepresentations and outright lies of a very charismatic speaker with an army of Leftist writers behind his teleprompter.
BIG JIM!, making fun of IQs is quite a deep and thoughtful argument, thank you for your comments.

From what I know, Newman has not accepted the offer to speak. You may be embarrassed by saying he’ll be there. As far as letting Goode speak, that’s a waste of time. He has proven his lack of leadership skills for years. Does anyone remember WHY he didn’t get reelected? He was part of the problem. Very unresponsive to his constituency. This sounds like it is going to turn into a political/campaign rally instead of a tax protest.
“hijacked by a handful of Leftists”
We all had an election. Did you miss it? It was in all the papers.
The literal correctness of Pewty’s observation regarding the original tea party does not alter the fact that our Federal government has been hijacked by a handful of Leftists. No, we are not being represented well. And it is the intent of the T.E.A. Parties to convince a bipartisan majority in Congress to turn away from the disastrous path on which we find ourselves.
I don’t think you can call them “like thinking” Mr.Pitcoken. The Boston Tea Party was about taxation without representation. It had nothing to do with politicians who voters decided didn’t represent them well. If there was any “thinking” going on you would all know that.
Wouldn’t it better represent the will of the people if, instead, you threw Virgil Goode in the river? I would check back with the DEQ if I were you. Tea is one thing, Virgil is quite another.
I appreciate the opportunity to join like-thinking adults and send another message to our government that taxation is out of control! Emails, faxes, and letters are becoming less effective. Please join us so we can put some significant numbers behind this effort.
I just hope there is an adult there to help these people get across the railroad tracks.
Let’s see, Helgeson seems fairly smart and the doctor would have to be reasonably intelligent. You add the IQs of those two to Virgil and Newman and the average is going to be around 75. It scares me to think that even if they get past the tracks one of them is likely to drown.
This ought to be a hoot.
