Ward I

Mike Gillette (incumbent) Age: 44 Job: bioethics consultant (owner, Bioethical Services of Virginia, Inc.) Family: married with two daughters, ages 15 and 18 Hails from: Redding, Conn. What brought him to Lynchburg: Gillette first moved to Lynchburg in 1990 to take teaching jobs at both Randolph-Macon Woman’s College and the University of Virginia School of Medicine. He quit teaching in 1997 to get into consulting full-time.	Tom Shahady Age: 46 Job: environmental science professor, Lynchburg College Family: married with two sons, ages 18 and 8, and one daughter, age 15 Hails from: Chapel Hill, N.C. What brought him to Lynchburg: Shahady moved to Lynchburg in 2000 to accept a teaching position at Lynchburg College. Prior to that, he worked at Lenoir-Rhyne College in Hickory, N.C., where in addition to teaching he also coached football.	Jim Martin Age: 64 Job: retired (former owner, Jim Martin Pontiac Buick GMC) Family: married with one son, 37, and two grandchildren, ages 10 and 21 months Hails from: Collman, Ala. What brought him to Lynchburg: Martin came to Lynchburg in 1996 to take over what would be Jim Martin Pontiac Buick GMC. Prior to that, he’d been a partner in another car dealership in Little Rock, Ark.
Ward II

Ceasor Johnson (incumbent) Age: 42 Job: minister, Springhill Baptist Church Family: married with two sons, ages 12 and 14, and one daughter, age 8 weeks Hails from: Jackson, Miss. What brought him to Lynchburg: Johnson moved to Lynchburg in 1995 to work as an agent for the U.S. Agriculture Department's Natural Resources Conservation Service. He’s since retired from that job and is now a full-time minister.	David Johnston Age: 44 Job: server/manager, Charley’s Restaurant Family: engaged Hails from: Meadville, Penn. What brought him to Lynchburg: Johnston originally moved to Lynchburg in 1986 to attend Liberty University, where he graduated with a degree in finance. He made the city his full-time home after that.
Ward III

Jeff Helgeson (incumbent) Age: 42 Job: financial consultant (owner, Executive Financial Services) Family: single Hails from: Bloomington, Minn. What brought him to Lynchburg: Helgeson came to Lynchburg in 1985 to study at Liberty University, where he received both a bachelor’s degree in finance and a master’s of business administration. He made Lynchburg his full-time home after graduation.	Nat Marshall Age: 46 Job: human resources director, Babcock & Wilcox Company Family: married with two daughters, ages 12 and 10 Hails from: Bedford County What brought him to Lynchburg: Marshall grew up on the outskirts of Lynchburg in Bedford County. He’s lived in Lynchburg proper since 1987.

Turner Perrow Age: 33 Job: engineer (owner, Perrow Consulting Services) Family: married with one daughter, age 5 months Hails from: Lynchburg/Amherst County What brought him to Lynchburg: Perrow was born in Amherst County but spent most of his school years living in Lynchburg, where he graduated from E.C. Glass High School in 1992. He returned to the city after college to begin his career in engineering.	Marie Waller Age: 68 Occupation: retired (former government teacher, E.C. Glass High School) Family: single Hails from: Halifax County What brought her to Lynchburg: Waller moved to Lynchburg in 1963 to teach at E.C. Glass High School. This was the second job of her career — the first was at William Campbell High School in Campbell County, where she taught for two years.
