Facts about McCain you might not know
On the Aug. 31 Sunday Politics page in The News & Advance was the story “10 Things You Might Not Know About John McCain.”

Here are a few more:

Letters to the editorClick to send

*  Voted against veterans bills in 2004, ’05, ’06,  and ’07.

*  Voted for measures that target vets for annual fees to the VA, higher co-pays and even suspended enrollment.

*  Voted 19 times against raising the minimum wage.

*  If elected, would give 4 billion in tax breaks to “Big Oil.”

*  Voted against a national holiday in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. and continues to oppose civil rights laws.

*  Bloomberg News reports McCain is more hawkish on Iraq, Russia and China than President Bush.

*  The very conservative Pat Buchanan says, “He will make Cheney look like Gandhi.”

*  He says he’s against torture, but voted against a bill banning water boarding and then applauded Bush for vetoing the ban.

*  He stated, “I do not support Roe v. Wade. It should be overturned.”

*  Children’s Defense Fund voted him worst senator in Congress for children. He voted against the children’s health care bill and then defended Bush’s veto of the bill.

*  Many Republicans in Congress say he is too reckless to be president.

*  Public Citizen says he has 59 lobbyists raising money, more than any of the other candidates from either party had and his campaign manager is a lobbyist.

*  He sought the support of preacher John Hagee, who says Hurricane Katrina was God’s punishment for gay rights and called the Catholic Church the “anti-Christ” and a “false cult.”

*  He says he is pro-environment, yet scored 0 — yes, zero — from the League of Conservation Voters. He voted 25 times against alternative energy bills.

The above are documented facts that I can provide. Populace: Do not vote against your own self-interests again. Vote for the best candidate since John Kennedy, Barack Obama!

Lynchburg

A wonderful event
Hurricane Gustav-O blew into downtown Lynchburg last week.

Aug. 30 concluded another milestone event at the Academy of Fine Arts downtown. World-renowned pianist Gustavo Romero again wowed the attendees at the third annual Gustavo Romero Music Festival and Piano Competition, held at the Academy.

This festival, organized by Forte Chamber Music, brings attention to the Academy of Fine Arts and the wonderful programs that are centered in downtown Lynchburg.

Romero donates his time and incredible talent for the benefit of the restoration of the Academy Theater, which will become the centerpiece of concert and theater performance, hopefully in the near future.

Thanks to Romero for again striking at the heart of downtown Lynchburg. And special thanks go to the staff of the Academy for their tireless preparations and work in helping to stage this event. Look for the 2009 event in October next year at the Academy.

Cosmo,

You always have good ideas but never pursue them to their logical conclusion.

What Lynchburg badly needs are obese born-again Christian women mud wrestlers. That would certainly shut up all those dangerous fifth-column elitists in our midst!

Hey Cosmo, you are a hoot! Thanks for making me smile every day. (I mean it)

at least mcCain can make a decision.  Obama will probably just vote “present”.  His first step of change was to pick a VP with 35 years in DC…...but he rode the taxpayer subsidized train!

DeLay…Lott..Brownee…Ashcroft…Gonzalas…Libby…
Rove…Tennet…Craig…Abermott…and now PALIN!!!
The pious right wingers knew-know how to put new meaning to “Country First”.  If Palin’s appointment is McSame’s first executive decision I hope we dont see a second.

At least half of the people in this forum voted for Criminal-in-Chief once, if not twice.

I would like to know how they feel now that he is so discredited that his name is not even mentioned at the Republican Convention and he, himself, has used Gustav as an excuse for not showing up! Coward-in-Chief?

To add insult to injury, even McCain himself is calling for Change!

How true and yet it fails to register with the American public. I recognize McCain as an authenic American hero but he has sold his soul to the Republican “neocons” and promises only more of Bush-Cheney! McCain may be even more dangerous than war criminals Bush-Cheney for McCain talks and acts like he can’t wait to start his own war somewhere, be it Iran or even worse with Russia! Thank you Bev Jordan and News & Advance, I am going to share your letter with everyone I know across the country!

Bev,

Many of the reasons you have listed make me want to vote for Palin/McCain even more!  Thank you for sharing that with us!

Just curious.  Since Obama voted over 100 times “present” in IL, why do you say he is like Kennedy?  I always thought Kennedy could make decisions?

Egotist and Randolph,

There are posts in the Sept. 03 thread (addressed to you) I would appreciate answers to, if you don’t mind. Thanks.

Bev thanks for the info, but no one is listening. These right wingers actually want us to believe that McBush is an outsider and not part of the Washington establishment.
Anyone that believes that is, of course, a total moron. There is no one that is any more of an insider that John McCain yet the republicans are trying to portray him and his cutie VP as insurgents fighting the republican power structure. Good grief.
John McCain is a lifetime member of the Washington elitist club.
I was struck by how they had speeches by Fred Thompson, hollywood actor and not very good Tennessee senator, liberal pro-abortion New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani and Mitt Romney, mega-millionaire former governor of Massachussetts all calling Obama an east coast establishment elitist. What a shameless bunch of lying politicians and the flapping right-wingers loved it and bought every single lie.
There is no one so blind as he who will not see and there are a bunch of blind people on both sides.

Bev, I am so tired of hearing people equate Obama to John Kennedy, Winston Churchill, and the Messiah. Though McCain is a scary choice, I truly believe he that he won’t harm our country near as badly as Obama. I’m sorry, he just can’t inspire me enough to be willing to pay 60% of my income in taxes or live in a Marxist society. No one man can be the answer to the country’s problems.
