Writer: On taxes, Garrett’s the man
With Democrats in Washington working hard to raise my taxes to pay for the many new programs that will socialize our great nation, it is good to have a local politician who is committed to reducing my taxes and protecting our traditional family and community values.

This politician is Scott Garrett. On City Council, he has demonstrated his commitment to reducing taxes for small businesses in order to protect and create jobs in our grand city and to ensure that the family and community values that make Lynchburg such a wonderful place to raise a family and to live are protected.

When he is elected to House of Delegates from the 23rd District, he will continue to seek inequities and inefficiencies that will enable lower taxes and will ensure that the freedoms guaranteed to us by our Constitution are not sacrificed.

On Nov. 3, I plan to vote for Scott Garrett for my new delegate because I know he will best represent my values and protect my rights!

For Garrett
I came away from Thursday’s debate between Shannon Valentine and Scott Garrett with three distinct impressions:

* Valentine spoke in generalities and seems to want us to vote for her because we like her. (The lady seated next to me called it “pandering.”) Garrett focused on details of what he believes and on specific steps to put more money into classrooms without raising taxes and to help small businesses create jobs, in part by reducing their taxes. I can vote for someone who tells me exactly what they plan to do, not for someone who asks me to “just trust” them. (How often in politics have we been burned by that phrase?)

* During a spirited discussion about taxes, they both read from the Virginia FREE survey that Valentine answered. No matter how she spins it, she talks in the survey about increasing gas taxes, increasing driver’s license fees, creating a new sales tax on gas and on automobile repairs, and instituting tolls on U.S. 29 and U.S. 460. And she admitted that there are circumstances in which she would support those taxes and fees. Scott will not support them. Period.

* Valentine confirmed at the debate something that former Lynchburg Councilman Joe Siefert had told me earlier. During a General Assembly debate on gun laws, she was on the phone with him asking him his opinion on the different amendments. Valentine calls it “research.”

It seems more like lack of personal convictions on important issues. The improvement of her NRA rating from “D” to “B” seems more based on Joe Siefert’s convictions than her own. Garrett’s “A” rating from the NRA came from his personal convictions.

I’m voting for Scott Garrett because I much prefer his specifics to Valentine’s generalities.

An article on the WSET website about LU canceling classes and providing transportation for students to vote on November 3, concludes with:

“We spoke with Liberty Chancellor, Jerry Falwell, Jr. on the phone. He says none of this year’s elections directly influence the school, so students will not be encouraged to vote a particular way.“

Interesting! We are keeping our ears open!

All I can say about Doc Troxel’s comments is that I simply don’t agree and the facts really don’t back him up. If I were Valentine, I might ask Seiffert how to vote. I might ask a lot of people how to vote, seeking opinions. That’s not a big deal. And, I might trust Sieffert as a close advisor on the issue. That’s ok, too. Seeing that as not having convictions…that’s a long, long stretch.

Seeing Garrett as having specifics is a long, long stretch, too. He is the guy who doesn’t know what taxes he’d cut to create tax cuts. Sorry, Mr. Troxel, that doesn’t jive with specifics.

Valentine has a successful record of viable actions that have greatly supported Central Virginia. That is very specific.

The NRA is a one issue bandwagon. The world is much, much larger than that.

And Fred makes up another ad-hominem attack, all by himself.

Wow!  That’s genius.

BREAKING NEWS!

This just in:

Scott Garrett, if elected, will make his first priority the passage of a bill recommending the use of bake sales to finance highway repairs, as part of his creative no-tax Transportation Plan. He thought of this all by himself.

Wow! That’s leadership

IMPORTANT:

Doc is right, follow his advice: vote for the one who has original ideas (like cutting taxes) and will bring us what this area needs most, more guns!

My original letter said that Shannon asked Joe Siefert “how to vote.“ The Opinion Editor changed the wording. My point is that Shannon needs to vote based on her own convictions. If she has to ask others how to vote, what if she asks a person such as the person who sits next to her in the House of Delegates, Minority Leader Ward Armstrong. I’m sure HIS “opinions” will be good for our economy.

And Shannon had a D rating from the NRA two years ago. It only became (only) a B rating after she asked Joe Siefert about the bills. Does Shannon not know how the majority of her constituency want her to vote on such an important issue.

And whether Scott Garrett got an A or an AQ, his NRA rating is still higher than hers; in fact, the NRA endorsed Scott.

And about Shannon’s list of “specifics” - the way she described them sounded uniformly like others came up with the ideas and she just jumped on the bandwagon. I know those who already favor her will give her comments a different spin, but I still think she is more about personality than substance. That’s why my vote goes to Dr. Scott Garrett.

2dogs,

Garrett is a breath of fresh air but let your conscience guide you!

Yeah, Fred, I get it now. Can I change my position or do I have to vote for Valentine just because she is a good, principled, active, and successful legislator?

Shoot.
