Writers size up 23rd District hopefuls

For Valentine
I am supporting Del. Shannon Valentine for re-election to the Virginia House of Delegates this November because she has served her last two terms with integrity, honesty and an intense desire to represent the people of Central Virginia. She is not an ego-driven politician but a person focused on the real issues affecting the citizens from her district.

I am sorry that I do not feel that way about her opponent. At the Voters League Forum a few weeks ago, Scott Garrett spoke of the need for transparency in government and said that we could count on him.  As a member of City Council, he led the School Board appointment debacle not too long ago that resulted in a board member not being reappointed so that his choice would be. This was accomplished through manipulation and closed-door tactics. Interestingly, this same board member has since been reappointed and now serves as the board’s vice chairman. Need I say more?

We have enough of closed-door tactics, manipulation and “good ole boy” politicians in Richmond. For once, we have someone who wants to be there for the right reasons: to improve the lives of all Virginians. Join my husband, Bob, and me as we lend our support to Del. Valentine and, by all means, remember to vote Nov. 3.

For Garrett
In light of the current state of our local, as well as national, economy, I thought I would check to see which of our District 23 House of Delegates candidates would do the most to get business moving again.

Based on her own responses to the Virginia FREE survey, Del. Shannon Valentine believes the best way to improve our economy in the district is to raise taxes. She supports raising the gas tax, the general sales tax and the tax on automotive service. Moreover, she is a believer in sending taxes to Richmond in order to stimulate the local economy, and she supports higher drivers’ license fees, as well as higher auto registration fees.

She sure does seem to be looking out for our best interests. I can’t understand how sending our money to Richmond is going to help the local economy grow and prosper!

Scott Garrett, on the other hand, believes the best way to help our local economy is to cut taxes. I guess he has this idea that local people can build the local economy better than the bureaucrats in Richmond can.

I agree with Garrett. That’s why I will vote for him Nov. 3.

For Valentine
Del. Shannon Valentine just likes people. She doesn’t care if you are a Democrat, a Republican, an Independent or if you never vote.

If you go to her with a problem, she will try her best to help you out. She’s just the kind of person we need in Richmond to continue to represent us.

She deserves your vote; she has served all the people well. Please join with me in voting for Valentine on Nov. 3.

I would suspect that CS and johnfl and Grandma will vote “R” for “R"eligious reasons.  I don’t suspect for one minute that they will do so while realizing that themselves.  I would expect them to vehemently deny it and call me names for even suggesting it.  But, that’s what will happen.  It’s human nature.
I, on the other hand, would vote for a warm bowl of lard with a hair in it before I could bring myself to vote for a person who would support teaching children religious dogma in place of free contemplation.
The world at present is full of angry and self centered groups, each incapable of viewing human life as a whole, each willing to destroy civilization rather than yield an inch.  To this narrowness no amount of technical instruction will provide an antidote.
The antidote, in so far as it is a matter of individual psychology, is to be found in history, biology, astronomy and all those studies which, without destroying self respect, enable the individual to see himself in the proper perspective.  What is needed is not this or that piece of specific information, but such knowledge as inspires a conception of the ends of human life as a whole… art and history, acquaintance with the lives of heroic individuals, and no small understanding of the strangely accidental and ephemeral position of mankind in the universe.
It is from the large perceptions combined with “impersonal” emotions that wisdom most readily springs.  For that reason I couldn’t vote for Garratt, I admit it freely.  He represents a narrowing of thought.  Why, for all the tea in China, would I ever think that was a good idea?

So Scott wants to cut taxes but won’t know which ones until he gets there.

Ouch!

Shannon won’t raise taxes. She will reach across the isle to seek comprehensive bipartisan solutions to find robust revenue enhancement opportunities.

Ouch!

Ouch!

If you read the below statement and then read the posts of our beloved Frenchmen you will see he is following the game plan to the letter.

As an atheist, I promise to perpetuate the conspiracy of biological evolution, to suppress the evidence for the existence of an omnipotent god, and to further the cause of Satanism.  I will abuse any authority I may come to have by openly promoting the irrational faith of evolution as scientific fact and theory.  In addition, I vow to take every opportunity to conceal the more than ample evidence for the existence of god.  Finally, I will ridicule the church, the clergy and all those freethinking parishioners who have seen past the hoax of evolution, by characterising them as mindless sheep who are deluded and weak.  In all facets of life, whether spoken, written, or believed,

Randolph,

8 eagles.

Millions of born-again right-wing dodo birds!

Truly something to be proud of.

Martha:  Maybe the people drinking the kool-aid are the Valentine supporters?  Didn’t you see the past letters to the editor refuting the refuting of the tax claims?

24:  Crumbling infrastructure??!!  Haven’t you seen the massive work on the bridge right before the highschool??  Things are getting done!!!!

As far as education, that’s why my kids do not go to a government run school.

Why is it that the ONLY thing anyone ever has to say about Garrett is he will cut taxes?
Our infrastructure is crumbling before our eyes, our children are NOT getting the education they not only deserve, but the education we owe them and ourselves if we have any hope of ever seeing America succeed in the 21 Century.
And what’s this clown’s plan?  Hand me some pennies as a consolation prize for voting to do my children’s and grandchildren’s future on the cheap?
  No thanks.

Wendy Jacobs drank the Kool-Aid. Did you not read the previous letters to the editor refuting the “tax raising” claims?

It should be a source of some pride to Americans to hear that 8 of 9 Nobel prizes given this past week went to Americans.
