State, local races in spotlight
For Garrett
Here in the 23rd District, we are fortunate to have two excellent, well-qualified candidates vying for the position of our representative in the House of Delegates.
We personally know both candidates well, and realize that both are caring, family-oriented individuals who have our community’s best interest at heart. We’re glad that this election has created so much interest and realize that the choice between candidates is a difficult one. Consequently, we would like to offer voters more information and another perspective regarding Scott Garrett and why he is the better choice.
During his years as a general surgeon, he ran a very successful, fiscally responsible solo practice with only two employees.
Having a solo practice is very difficult as a medical doctor, and very rare. It is rare due to the physical strains on the individual, as well as the difficulties associated with running a small business such as a medical practice with economic success.
He was able to accomplish this through a great deal of hard work, good decisions and frugality. In fact, he had done this so well that when he was faced with the decision to retire early, even with such a young family, he was able to do so with ease. His fiscally sound decisions and smart savings regarding his future enabled this early retirement.
In this next phase of his life, he has admirably decided to give back to the community by representing us and helping us to make sound decisions for our community’s future. We need people like Garrett, especially during this time of rampant spending and pet projects. he will work for us to continue the philosophy of our founding fathers by limiting government and keeping taxes low.
Please join us in voting for Scott Garrett for delegate Nov. 3. He is the better choice.

For Deeds, et. al.
The team of Creigh Deeds, Jody Wagner and Steve Shannon is particularly well positioned to continue the policies of Govs. Mark Warner and Tim Kaine. After the disaster of Gov. Jim Gilmore, they have made Virginia “the best managed state,” “the best state to do business” and “the best state to raise families.”
Deeds is plain-spoken with an abundance of common sense behind him.
He has had years of experience in state government and clearly understands the central issues facing Virginia today. He is a centrist, able to foster compromise between both parties to get results.
Wagner’s experience as state treasurer and secretary of finance will serve us well as we navigate these difficult budgetary times.
Shannon has prosecutorial experience as well as legislative experience, both of that will be a tremendous asset in the office of attorney general.
Together they make a formidable team which will keep Virginia on a sound track for the next four years.

For Valentine
I write this letter as a Lynchburg citizen, as a Christian and as a 1997 graduate of Liberty University. I applaud the university for urging students to register to vote and become actively involved in local politics. For a lot of the students, this will be their first experience at being involved in such an activity.
That being said, particularly with the upcoming election closing in, I hope that LU affords its students the ability to have equal access to both candidates and their point of view. LU certainly has many avenues to allow both candidates to be heard, however to the best of my knowledge there has been no open forum on campus to allow these candidates to speak.
I know that there has been a lot of talk about the candidates on the campus and in campus publications, particularly one candidate without allowing her to directly address the students and deliver her point of view. This philosophy goes against our great nation and the principles of democracy it was built on. As an institute of higher learning complete with a law school and replica of the Supreme Court, one would think that teaching students to think critically and allowing them to come to their own conclusions after hearing both sides of an argument would be important.
Therefore as a Liberty alumnus, I must say that I am supporting Shannon Valentine for re-election to the House of Delegates based on what she has done for the city of Lynchburg. I urge all my fellow Liberty alumni and current students to look past the fabrications and fallacies created by the other candidate.
Once you see her for who she really is you will find an intelligent, caring, family-oriented candidate who has refrained from stooping to level of her opposition. You will see a candidate who actually has a platform to run on instead of a survey to keep falling back on. You will see a candidate with experience, which is what this city needs.

The best candidates
My wife and I have both lived and worked in Lynchburg our entire lives, and care very much for our hometown. We both have always voted for the person we feel is the best candidate for our area —regardless of the party affiliation. In addition we feel frustration towards those who only vote for a party representative regardless of his/her qualifications.
We encourage our friends and associates to support the following in this year’s election: Bob McDonnell for governor; Bill Bolling for lieutenant governor; Steve Shannon for attorney general; and Shannon Valentine as our representative to the House of Delegates. We especially appreciate all that Del. Valentine has done for our city and state, and hope that she will be rewarded with another term.
Join us in electing the best leaders for our region and the state of Virginia.

For Valentine
I have been watching and measuring the response to last year’s historic presidential election. So much of what I’ve seen and heard has been remarkable. However, none of what I’ve experienced has prepared me for for the kind of campaign Scott Garrett has run against Shannon Valentine.
I’ve known Scott Garrett for some time, but during these past few months he has disappointed me. Not only has he run a negative campaign filled with untruths and innuendos, but he’s consistently voted against newer, more attractive housing for lower-income residents of our city, voted against repairing the D Street bridge, voted against occupational program funding for the Jubilee Center, voted against having a bus route to help the Daniels Hill residents get to and from their jobs or to shop and back. Lastly, at the public forum held at Court Street Baptist Church last month, he stated firmly and without pause, that he is against restoring the rights of men and women who, although were previously incarcerated, have now paid their debt to society.
I’m voting for Shannon Valentine not because she is a Democrat, but because she has done a marvelous job as our delegate for the last two years. She is fair, honest, accountable and courageous, and she respects and works for all of the citizens of our district, not just the elite. Above all, in the face of untruths and innuendos launched by Garrett and his campaign, she has remained cool and undaunted, focusing on the issues. The kind of person who I am proud to have represent me.

I have noticed a trend in the Valentine-Garrett race. It seems that the old Lynchburg (Rivermont/Boonsboro) establishment is supporting Valentine in spite of her liberal voting record and beliefs. Ken White, Elliott Schewel, Joan Jones, the News Advance, Preston Bryant, and Randy Nelson are a few examples of Valentine supporters. It makes me suspicious when all the elitists support the same candidate even if when some are supporting conservatives in statewide elections. I think the old guard elitists are desperate to hold on to power in this city and Garrett is a threat to them all.
“The model relationship among church, state, and family, based on history, law, and scripture, is presented as a framework in which legitimate public policy decisions must be made to facilitate family restoration.“ This is a “relationship” between all the above to help get families back to the way they were! I don’t see anything wrong with this. Like giving a tax break to married couples, and making divorces harder. I guarantee that if it was harder to get a divorce, you would see people getting married for the right reasons and staying married longer and trying to work things out. I believe that this is what he is trying to get across. Can you deny that this is a good thing?
Political codes words? Like what? He goes beyond blaming Liberal Progressives on page 3! “Regardless of the genesis for the change, the current debate in America over which values and programs are best for the family and public policy in general, goes beyond the basic arguments of conservatism versus progressivism.“
Liberalism did cause legislation that makes abortions legal. Wasn’t it the liberals recently who wanted 13 year old girls to be able to have the choice to have an abortion without notifying their parents? FOCA? America; the only place on the planet where a 13 year old girl can have an abortion without parental consent but must have a note from parents to miss School….
What contributions do you attribute to Republicans for the decline of family values?
You don’t think computers/ipods/cell phones/playstations/etc. don’t detract from family time? You don’t think the UN making the discission to teach kids how to masturbate affects the parental relationships with kids? You don’t think parents working overtime/seven days a week to put food on the table doesn’t take away from family time? “Sorry honey, Daddy has to go to work, maybe he can take you fishing next weekend.“....??? You don’t think these things, even recently (evolutionary) doesn’t affect the family? SERIOUSLY??? I may be 23 but I understand the impact of these things on children. I see it everyday!
Conservative thinking is common sense! I did’t find one think offensive but I am glad that you pointed out what you thought was offensive; that McDonnell blames Liberals for the decline in family values leading to the increase in crime rates, increase in abortions, increase in divorces, etc.
Gallup polls conclude that 40% of Americans interviewed describe their political views as conservative versus only 21% identifying themselves as liberal. This was taken in June 2009. I bet there are alot more people out there that agree with me that if abortions were harder to get, divorces were harder to get, more time was spent at home with family, much of the crime and violence we see today, would simply vanish.
I’m curious 1 VA Dem, I assume from your statements that you oppose McDonald. If so then you apparently favor Deeds. Why? Or is it just party affiliation?
Um…Robbie it might interest you to know that Valentine has campaigned at LU several times.
Both candidates were invited to LU for a debate recently by the College Republicans and College Democrats. Also, LU has been very good about allowing both candidates to campaign at the school and both clubs to campaign at the school. What you want is total Valentine and no Garrett, obviously.
Finally, the school newspaper sent a questionairre to both candidates that would have ran in last weeks’ edition. Garrett took a day to respond and did so in person. Valentine’s campaign took well over a week to give responses, and refused to go face to face. They told LU that Shannon “does not give yes or no answers to issues”
Thankfully one doesn’t have to vote yes or no in Richmond, right ![]()
Firechick, I think we both know that your mind is made up and you are simply spoiling for an argument but I have some free time so here goes:
Let’s start with his Abstract: “The model relationship among church, state, and family, based on history, law, and scripture, is presented as a framework in which legitimate public policy decisions must be made to facilitate family restoration.” If you see no problem with this statement, that is your choice but given our history and turmoil over the separation of church and state, this frank and scary idea is not acceptable as ‘how to’ create public policy.
His simplistic “Statement of the Problem” completely glosses over so much of the twentieth century history and self-servingly aims the problem at the cause he espouses. I would expect such generalization and sophistry from a 23 year old with an agenda but not a 34 year old with a serious attempt to discuss an issue. His constant use of political code words and hot button issues while conveniently ignoring any contribution from or frustration with Conservative, judgmental politics from his side of the aisle is astounding. “legalization” of abortion, “no-fault divorce revolution and a leftward shift in majority party politics”, “the sexual revolution, the Vietnam War, and the Great Society vision of the Johnson Administration” all bad from the Democrats and leftists only, even blaming “the New Deal of the Roosevelt administration”. In essence he blames the whole problem he sees on Liberals and Liberalism and just glosses over the other contributions that are so obvious to everyone else. OMG, “changes in the family may be superficially attributed to technological advances, growing international influences, financial circumstances, or evolutionary progress, it is of profound importance to be cognizant that changes in ideology and religious beliefs preceded the contemporary breakdown of the American family.” SERIOUSLY, you think those were SUPERFICIAL impacts? REALLY? Firechick, you, at 23 may well think so, but trust me you at 34 or 51 will, I pray, not.
Then he goes on to blame the help that was offered for causing the problem which is, as they say, bassackwards. Instead of acknowledging the help was too little, too late he says it created the situation. BULL! Blaming the schools for kicking God out is another red herring from this fisherman. But his Piece de resistance: Blame the SCOTUS for telling the government to get out of people’s birth control decisions and thereby “obliterated the difference between marriage and non-marriage” Pure drivel. Support that one do you?
No, I will not refute point by point this disgusting diatribe against Liberalism as the great satan. His thesis is as warped and backward as Conservative thinking gets. It is self-serving, dishonest, theocracy not thought filled argument and ideology. The deliberate painting of everything bad as being Liberal and everything Liberal being bad is just hooey. To not even acknowledge the contributions, condemnations, bigotry and well documented role of BOTH political parties and ALL ideologies to the problem is dishonest and pure politics and should have no place in a researched presentation of fact. This is a foul piece of writing from a 34 year old ideologue and to support it is to be the same. He threw away an opportunity at honest research, discussion and conclusions then and he does not get a do over now. His career has been spent in service of that same Conservative ideology and demagoguery and I will have none of it!

Both candidates were invited to LU for a debate recently by the College Republicans and College Democrats. Also, LU has been very good about allowing both candidates to campaign at the school and both clubs to campaign at the school. What you want is total Valentine and all Garret, obviously.
Finally, the school newspaper sent a questionairre to both candidates that would have ran in last weeks’ edition. Garret took a day to respond and did so in person. Valentine’s campaign took well over a week to give responses, and refused to go face to face. They told LU that Shannon “does not give yes or no answers to issues”
Thankfully one doesn’t have to vote that way in Richmond, right ![]()
Grandma, I am not letting anyone change my mind about my God, my Guns, my liberties and rights, nor about McDonnell.
I think the decline of family is the root of most problems today.
Notice not one of those who are opposed to McDonnell could name not one paragraph that could be found offensive! Maybe reading it would “enlighten” them!
Bledsoe,
No, It didn’t take all the way to page 69 before locating something worth quoting. I found the whole thesis worth quoting, even requoting! Its just this sentence that I thought summed up everything.
Free2BeMe…
It didn’t fly over my head. I was being sarcastic but obviously you didn’t get the joke or it flew over your head…
