Perriello says he’s undecided on health-care bill

Rep. Tom Perriello, D-5th District

At least two issues stand between Rep. Tom Perriello, D-5th District, and a “yes” vote on the health care bill that was proposed in the House of Representatives this week, he and his spokeswoman said Friday.

Perriello won’t support the bill if it allows federal funding of abortion, said Jessica Barba, his spokeswoman. He’s negotiating to get the bill’s abortion language cleared up, Barba said.

Also, the bill will need to allow interstate competition among health insurance companies, Perriello said during a conference call with reporters Friday. The feature could reduce the amounts people would pay for insurance coverage.

Rep. Bob Goodlatte, R-6th District, said the House bill has many more problems than the two Perriello said were bothering him most.

The bill introduced Thursday by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi “completely misses the mark,” Goodlatte said, asserting that it would put Washington in control of patients’ treatments and drive up the cost of private health insurance.

Goodlatte said Republicans have “a better way” that doesn’t focus on regulating health insurance and would give patients more choices and make insurance more affordable.

Goodlatte said Republican proposals would let “insurers sell policies across state lines to increase competition and lower premium costs,” along with providing medical liability reform, also called tort reform.

Perriello said he’s in favor of those things too, especially the interstate competition.

“I’ve moved from ‘no’ to ‘undecided’” on whether to vote for the health care bill, Perriello said.

“I’m always trying to get to a ‘yes’ on the bill. I want to take the weekend to look through all 1,900 pages of it in detail,” Perriello said.

Debate is scheduled to begin next week on the House floor.

Perriello said he will be negotiating with House leaders about the bill’s language on abortion and interstate competition for insurance, among other issues.

“I think we’re moving in the right direction, but I’m not committed yet,” Perriello said Friday.

It’s easy to understand why one might think that Perriello is a more moderate Dem.  He’s been to Thomas Road and the American Legions and the D-Day Memorial, but when you view his few votes and examine what he supports, there is little difference in him and the Nancy Pelosis of the world.  One talk w/some of his staff and you’d see that they are the same lame-brain, Al Gore Global Warming types that have taken over the Democrat party.

If this legislation had anything to do about actually reforming health care, it might be a good thing.  But what Perriello and the Dems want is a complete takeover of the health care system in the country by the govt.  If you’re a big whig at Centra Health that’s great for you.  If you’re a patient or a doctor or an employee there, it’s going to horrible for you.  And if anyone has children here, it’s going to be even worse for them, because they will grow up in an America where they will actually have to pay the price for all of this out-of-control spending by our politicians.

As a native Californian, I have to laugh at people’s ideas that Perriello’s a left-wing extremist.

Trust me, Perriello’s barely a lefty.

So, who do the republicans follow, Michel Steele, Rush, or Beck?

He is a democrat and he will not go against his party. Obama is his boss and he will do nothing to upset him. Once in office, you no longer work for the people, you work for the party.

Imprimis…Ok, my opinion is, based on my experience and facts, that Periello wants to see a good health care plan that in fact works for us all, that he wants limited government, and that he treats dogs and children with great care.

Got a letter from my insurance provider. My premiums are going to go up 35%. Why? They stated that because there was heavy use of the HSA pool to which I belong, they need to make sure the funding in the pool is available.

35%? Now, how is that sustainable. I suggest that our legislators get off their duff and do what Periello is doing. Work, read the stuff, get clear on alternatives, and come out with some kind of health care bill that works. I particularly don’t care if they do it by black magic. What we got is broke.

I was cheering.  Well, I was cheering when I was not cutting down trees and destroying streams and wetlands.

naturelover -

I wonder if it’s possible for you to EVER address the issues that we’re discussing, which is Periello considering Obama’s health plan?

Try this.  See if you can get through a whole thread without using any of the following:

Bush
Cheney
Fox
Hannity
Limbaugh
Falwell

I don’t think you can; it seems to be all you can do.  I (and a lot of others) don’t listen to, and didn’t support ANY of the above, so bringing them into the discussion and beating them up doesn’t add a thing, except to point out that there seems to be a complete vacuum of ideas in the general direction of “left”.

I’m curious to see if Perriello and the democrats can pass a bill with as much wasted money in it as Bush’s medicare drug plan that was just another way to throw taxpayer dollars at big pharma.
There is a lot of unreasonable hatred here claire, they just want another chance at turning Virginia back into a red, no, white state. They are so obvious in that they just throw names and nothing to back it up. Where were these great conservatives when Bush and ol’ Virgil were running this nation right into a big hole? I’ll tell you, they were cheering them on.

An opinion would be differentiated from fact by phrases like “I think” or “I doubt” or “In my opinion”.  What I saw below were people presenting FACTS and I was wondering where you were getting them.

Imprimis - Thank you for clarifying that your statement was an opinion based on his record.  I just like to know where the information comes from.

I reckon he’ll be spending the weekend reading over the 1900 page bill because that’s what he says he’s going to do.  He’s given me no reason to think otherwise.  I really don’t have much of an opinion on what he’s done so far, which is why I would love additional data.  That’s all.

Clare -

Look right above here ...

It says “Voice Your Opinion”.

My opinion is that, based on his own statements and his record, that Periello

1) Wants more government control of our healthcare

2) Supports, in general, the Obama-nation

3) And is trying to “hide” that leaning from his constituency, because he’s realized that it’s not what he really wants.

Now, you post YOUR opinion.  That’s how it works.
