RICHMOND — In his final high school football game before he takes his considerable talent down River Road to the University of Richmond, quarterback Jake McGee gave Collegiate’s fans one more reason to remember him fondly.

Facing a Liberty Christian Academy defense that blanked Potomac School in the Virginia Independent Schools Division I semifinals, McGee finished with 396 yards of offense and seven touchdowns as the Cougars defended their state title and won their fifth in the past seven seasons with a 48-28 victory Saturday.

BERRYVILLE — A few moments before, Clarke County High School’s fans were screaming louder than they had all game. As two players hit Appomatox County quarterback Kenny Scott at the Eagles’ 37-yard line, they began to roar again.

Their fervor was short-lived. Scott somehow shook off the two tacklers at the line of scrimmage and wasn’t touched again until he crossed the goal line with 6:25 left in the fourth quarter, giving the Raiders the two-touchdown lead they needed to secure the win.

GRETNA — It didn’t seem like much would go right for Gretna on Saturday against Buckingham. An inadvertent whistle by an official, a costly penalty on a big gain and an assortment of events kept the Hawks off balance and out of sync.

One thing that would work was the quick slant pass to Ted Jennings, who turned those into positive gains throughout the second half, which only made it easier to go back to it in overtime.

Nick Miller found Jennings on a slant route and the junior receiver did the rest, bouncing off defenders into the end zone, giving the two-time defending state champion Hawks a 28-22 overtime victory over Buckingham in the semifinals of the Region B, Division 2, tournament Saturday afternoon.

BEDFORD — As time wound down in the first half, with Robert E. Lee seeking to break a 14-14 tie at Liberty High in a Region III, Division 3, semifinal rematch with the Minutemen, Anthony Reynolds made a one-handed interception of a 20-yard pass by Lee quarterback Devante White near his own goal line.

The ball was tipped around twice by teammates before Reynolds picked it off and returned it 100-yards for an improbable score that gave Liberty a lead it wouldn’t relinquish in a 35-28 triumph.

NARUNA — For years, the William Campbell-Gretna game has been a high-stakes affair.

Though that was not the case this year for the Generals, the Hawks still had plenty on the line in their regular-season finale, including a share of the Dogwood District title and a No.1-seed in the Region B, Division 2, playoffs.

Playing on Saturday instead of Friday because of the weather, which wreaked havoc on area football fields, the Hawks, led by senior running back Andre Dickerson’s 169 rushing yards, steamrolled the Generals 69-30.

With the two teams combining to win the past nine Dogwood District titles, many felt that this game — the first time the two teams have played in the regular season finale since 2002 — would decide the champion of the Dogwood.

Wet weather conditions have forced Liberty Christian Academy’s football team to practice inside the past three days, meaning the Bulldogs, who are coming off a bye week, could be a bit rusty going into tonight’s Virginia Independent Schools Division I state semifinal against Potomac School.

Fortunately, they will have the luxury of playing on the FieldTurf at Liberty University’s Williams Stadium.

GRETNA — It’s an odd feeling for a Gretna Hawk football team: Trying to bounce back from a regular-season loss more than once in a year.

It hasn’t happened since 2002, when the Hawks went 8-4. But that was exactly the task in front of Gretna this week. The Hawks were coming off a loss to Appomattox, the first Dogwood team other than William Campbell to defeat them in the last seven years. Gretna also lost its season opener at LCA.

And pity poor Chatham, which was on the other side of Gretna’s rebound effort. The Hawks scored two touchdowns before the Cavaliers could blink as Gretna cruised to a 52-0 victory that lasted less than two hours, thanks to a second-half running clock.

RINGGOLD — Neal Thomas did not play like his heart was heavy and his mind was elsewhere. For the senior wide receiver, the plays that he made on offense and defense seem to come as naturally as they would in any other game.

Thomas, who lost his father earlier in the week, scored two touchdowns midway through the Raiders’ contest against Dan River that swung the tide toward the Appomattox sideline.

That momentum — and a key stop by the Raiders’ defense on a potential Dan River game-tying two-point conversion in overtime — gave the Raiders a 28-26 victory and ensured Appomattox a share of the Dogwood District title and a berth in the Region B, Division 2, playoffs.

Fourteen jumping jacks. That’s how many the Liberty Minutemen football team will do in practice.

The number is 14 because that is how long coach Chris Watts wants this season to be. A 14-game season for the Minutemen would mean a first-round bye in the playoffs and a run to the state championship game.

The playoff picture may still be uncertain, but with a 43-23 home win against Heritage on Friday, the Minutemen locked up that first-round bye and assured themselves of at least two more weeks of practice and sets of 14 jumping jacks.

The rest included the Raiders, who last won a district title more than 10 years ago, Altavista which last made the regional playoffs nearly 20 years ago, and Dan River.

The Raiders routed Nelson County 50-14 to stay in the race for the district championship. Quarterback Kenny Scott accounted for 193 total yards (139 rushing) and two rushing touchdowns, and Joe Reed rushed for 76 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries to lead the attack.

The name on the schedule was Chatham, just another in a string of conference games for Altavista. But it might as well have read trap game.

The Colonels were coming off an emotional 19-6 road win over Appomattox and facing a winless Chatham team that nearly knocked off William Campbell last week. Coupled with homecoming, the game had the makings of a letdown. However, Altavista dominated both sides of the ball, forcing five fumbles and scoring seven touchdowns to notch its seventh victory of the season, 47-14.

BEDFORD — Liberty’s offense is built on deception. It’s difficult at times to see from the sidelines exactly which running back in Liberty’s three-back set gets the football. It can even be tougher for the players on the field.

Jefferson Forest, though, had played sound assignment football for most of Friday night, making sure to key in on the fullback every time he touched the ball. The Cavaliers made one mistake, one bad read, and it proved costly.

ALTAVISTA — Mike Scharnus spent most of Friday night in tunnel-vision mode, aware of only the situations on the field in front of him and the instructions blaring into his ear through his headset.

At one point, when a referee complained that Scharnus kept walking on to the field to talk to his players, Scharnus’ response was, “I didn’t know. I wasn’t aware.”

But after Daelyn Myers ripped through the Dan River front line for a 41-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter, essentially sealing Altavista’s 37-12 romp of the Wildcats, Scharnus slipped out of the headset and yelled, “Yeah baby!” He knew the work was done, and the celebration of what he would later call the biggest victory in his three years as head coach at Altavista had begun.

He could sleep peacefully Friday night after the Bees (6-1, 2-1 Seminole District) overcame a 7-0 halftime deficit and held off Heritage, 14-13, stopping the Pioneers’ two-point conversion attempt in the final 40 seconds.

In a 33-10 victory in what Amherst coach Cecil Phillips calls one of the three toughest Group AA venues in the state, the Lancers’ defense was downright nasty, making up for a somewhat sloppy offensive performance. The Cougars took over at their one-yard line with less than four minutes to play, and at the time, Amherst had more sacks (seven) than Pulaski had yards of total offense (four).

Early in the second quarter of the Raiders’ 27-14 win against Park View on Friday night, Thomas wasn’t perfect. Far from it. He jumped far too early when Scott lofted a deep pass, and he was nearly underneath his defender, Michael Taylor.

But Thomas showed his ingenuity and an ability to adjust on the fly, wrenching backward to get a hand on the pass before hauling it in for a 37-yard touchdown that put the Raiders (3-1) up 14-7. They wouldn’t trail again.

GRETNA — While being a graduate assistant coach at Virginia Tech in 1990, Gretna coach Kevin Saunders learned from the best that defense and special teams can win football games.

Gretna’s defense forced five Radford turnovers and Andre Dickerson returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown as Gretna celebrated its homecoming with a 20-14 victory over Radford on Friday night.

The fourth annual Black and Blue Bowl between E.C. Glass and Jefferson Forest lived up to its name.

Every inch, every completed pass and every kick during the three overtime periods put the crowd a bit closer to the edge of their seats until the Cavaliers’ Dylan Sims’ 18-yard field goal separated the two teams and JF walked out of City Stadium with a 31-28 victory.

AMHERST — Leave it to Amherst County High School’s football team to turn a showdown between undefeated Seminole District powers into a homecoming parade.

The Lancers (4-0, 2-0 Seminole) came out as a team on a mission in Friday night’s clash against Liberty and took care of business early, rolling to a 42-0 lead before the halftime pageantry, when quarterbacks Kirby Anderson and Anthony Rose were crowned homecoming kings of their respective junior and senior classes.

Brookville’s football team was reminded of an important lesson Friday night — there are no freebies in the Seminole District.

Visiting Rustburg gave the Bees all they could handle for three quarters before Brookville broke away with three touchdowns in the final 12:05 in a 21-0 victory.

“That was our first Seminole District football game, and that’s what we’ve got to expect every week in the Seminole,” Bees coach Jeff Woody said. “Rustburg is a good football team, and they’ve got it going in the right direction. Give them all the credit in the world. They had us stifled.”

Perhaps it was the 13-0 loss to Broad Run in the Group AA, Division 4, state championship game last December at Liberty University.

Perhaps it was the fact Amherst graduated its entire starting offensive line.

But it seemed like this season, more people than ever were wanting to see the Lancers prove something before saying it was the same old Amherst team that had been to three consecutive state title games.

GRETNA — There is a reason both Kevin and Matthew Saunders have been successful everywhere they have coached. It’s not that they’ve had an overwhelming advantage over other teams or that their coaching schemes baffled others.

It’s that both of them, at a young age, learned from the best that they had to step up and take the lead.

Liberty High football coach Chris Watts knows the Minutemen will have to play a near perfect game to contain Amherst’s volatile Wing-T running attack in tonight’s Seminole District-opening clash at Lancer Stadium.

“They’re extremely quick,” Watts said. “I don’t know if there’s a team (in the state) as fast as them across the board, having that many backs that can run. They’ve just got so much speed that if you make a mistake or don’t stay with them, they’re going to hurt you.”
