Richard Anthony isn’t even on Liberty’s official football roster. Spencer Landis is a fourth-string quarterback who hasn’t played a snap this season.

Yet those two became important players at practice this week, as the Flames prepared for tonight’s game against VMI — Liberty’s home finale — and the Keydets’ triple-option offense.

Danny Broggin was a state-championship winning quarterback at William Campbell High School in 2005, but once he took the final snap in the Generals’ 18-0 win over J.I. Burton at James Madison’s Bridgeforth Stadium, he knew his time as a signal caller was done.

No one was recruiting the 6-foot Broggin as a quarterback, and the school who eventually offered him a scholarship — Liberty — had no plans of using him behind center.

When he arrived in the fall of 2006, though, Broggin had no idea what his role would be. It’s a theme that’s carried over throughout his Flames career.

When Liberty football coach Danny Rocco first decorated his office at the Williams Football Operations Center when it opened in 2006, he adorned the walls with photos from previous coaching stops.

There was a shot of Virginia’s linebacking corps, which included players like Ahmad Brooks and Darryl Blackstock. There was a shot of Boston College beating Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind.

As the years went by, he replaced the art with photos of Liberty’s football accomplishments. There’s a shot of the Flames winning their first Big South crown on Gardner-Webb’s field. There are photos of key members of this season’s senior class, a group that’s near and dear to the head coach’s heart.

This week’s inspirational message at Liberty’s football operations center: “Leave nothing to chance.”

It’s plastered all over the walls on sheets of white copy paper, accompanied by Charleston Southern logos. The Flames have been the dominant team in the Big South since 2006, winning 12 straight league games.

Liberty has outscored today’s opponent, Charleston Southern, 72-0 in the last three halves between the two teams and 92-10 overall.

Danny Rocco’s natural inclination is to express disappointment with his football team’s inconsistency.

Among the top three rushers, two are sophomores and one is a freshman. Six of the top seven receivers are either freshmen or sophomores. And though he’s a senior, the starting quarterback didn’t arrive on campus until August, so he’s a relative newcomer.

EASTON, Pa. — If it’s a Danny Rocco-coached team, then the third game of the season must be on the road against a team from one of the FCS’ auto-bid conferences.

In 2006, it was Towson (CAA). In 2007, Elon (Southern Conference). Last season, Liberty’s third game was at Western Carolina (Southern Conference). Today, that trend continues with a trip to Lafayette of the Patriot League.

Practice had gone well enough this week. Then Thursday came. As the finishing touches were put on Williams Stadium in preparation for tonight’s Liberty home opener against North Carolina Central, Flames coach Danny Rocco noticed the wavering focus, the lagging sense of urgency. And he unloaded as the team met at midfield at the end of practice, offering a not-so-gentle reminder that the Flames were 0-1, and hadn’t won a football game since last November.

Chris Rocco’s comment last Saturday was completely unsolicited, especially considering he plays a prominent role on Liberty’s defense.

“Beecher, wow, he’s tough,” Rocco said.

That seemed to be the overriding sentiment among the Flames’ players in Morgantown. Tommy Beecher, the senior quarterback who transferred from South Carolina, made an immediate and indelible impression on his new teammates early in the game. Beecher took off on a scramble on 3rd-and-7 from the WVU 46 after the pocket collapsed, sprinted to the middle of the field, slid for the first down … and got popped by WVU cornerback Robert Sands after he was already on the ground.

Ultimately, Danny Rocco’s decision to start Tommy Beecher at quarterback for Liberty’s Sept. 5 opener at West Virginia was about how Rocco could get his best 11 offensive players on the field at once. Beecher, a senior South Carolina transfer, is limited. He plays quarterback or nothing. Mike Brown? As Liberty’s Johnny Stephene pushed Travis Holmes on the back for a foul in the second half, Holmes’ momentum kept him going until he stepped three rows deep into a throng of cadets in the end zone at Radford’s Dedmon Center.

While he was there, Holmes exchanged a few high fives with his fellow cadets, who responded with enthusiastic whoops and slaps on the back.

Meanwhile, on the Liberty bench, there was point guard Jesse Sanders, a spectator again after re-injuring his right ankle so severely that the toes on his foot resembled the skin of a Concord grape.

Liberty has spent much of the 2008-09 basketball season playing a five-guard lineup, but it appears the Flames have finally found a big man.
Make that two big men.

With 30 seconds left and the Flames trailing at Winthrop in an Jan. 10 Big South Conference contest, redshirt freshmen Avery Warley rammed an offensive rebound home to put the Flames on top to stay.

In Monday’s rematch with the Eagles in the Vines Center, Warley was not called upon for any late-game heroics, but came up big in another tight game. She shot a perfect 7-for-7 from the floor to help lift the Flames to a 63-48 victory.

It was Liberty’s 13th win in a row and 500th in the program’s history.

Those who bounced early missed — depending on which side you were on — a mind-numbing collapse or an epic comeback, one completed when Liberty’s Seth Curry scored an uncontested layup with 5.6 seconds left to put the Flames up four points. The first 15 minutes of Liberty’s game with East Tennessee State Tuesday night were rough. Really rough. The game was played with all the physical subtlety of a sledgehammer crashing into glass. Bodies flew everywhere. Shots caromed all over the floor, or sometimes missed rim altogether.

Amid this maelstrom of rough and tumble basketball, though, were five minutes of near perfection near the end of the first half for the Flames, who forced ETSU into five turnovers and seven missed shots during closing stretch. Liberty won 64-54, and the 15-0 run just before halftime played a key role in the Flames’ fifth straight victory.
