Three weeks ago, Virginia Tech’s football team had so much to play for. It was still in the national title hunt and was the odds on favorite to win its third straight ACC championship.

After two losses and a precipitous fall in the rankings, the Hokies have had to dig deep for inspiration.

There’s still at least one major motivator on the line for the rest of the season.

“It’s definitely pride,” Hokies senior linebacker Cody Grimm said.

BLACKSBURG — It took a video game for Eddie Whitley to realize there was a rivalry between Virginia Tech and Miami. Of course, that was before he played in one of the real-life contests.

BLACKSBURG — Quarterback Tyrod Taylor made big-time passes. The offensive line gave him time to throw. The receivers got open and made some tough catches.

No. 11 Virginia Tech displayed all the components of a quick-strike offense during the one-minute, 23-second drive that gave it a dramatic 16-15 win over Nebraska last Saturday.

It’s hoping to carry that late-game success over to Saturday’s home game against No. 9 Miami.

The NFL draft resumed Sunday at 10 a.m., about 12 hours after the second round had ended the night before.

A run on cornerbacks followed. Corners from nine schools, including William & Mary, Nicholls State and San Jose State, were selected in the third round, and four more were taken at that position in the fourth.

In the fifth, three more cornerbacks came off the board before Victor “Macho” Harris’ name finally was called, some five hours into the final day of the seven-round draft.

Almost every evening before he goes to bed, Cheick Diakite places a mat on the living-room floor of his apartment. He kneels on the mat and bends his 6-9 body forward until his forehead and palms touch the floor — the same way millions of Muslims end their days back home the West African nation of Mali.
And then he prays. He prays for his Virginia Tech basketball team. He prays for success in the next game. He prays for someone to notice him so he can play professionally in Europe.
He wants to use those paychecks to buy a new surface and rims for the court near his boyhood house where he learned to play basketball just eight years ago. As a friend dragged him there for the first time, he couldn’t have known that court would change his life. It took him to a prep school in Maine, then to college at Tech, where he will play at Cassell Coliseum for the final time tonight. It let him earn an education and even Americanized him a bit.

Tonight’s 8:45 p.m. kickoff for the Orange Bowl isn’t a concern, according to the head coaches for both Virginia Tech and Cincinnati.
The players were able to get a good night’s sleep last night and they’ll have time to relax this afternoon before directing their focus on the game.
Tech coach Frank Beamer said he and his assistants will meet sometime this afternoon to go over the gameplan, but other than that, he has nothing special planned to get the players locked in.
They’ll approach the game just like any other night game.

When midnight approaches, Virginia Tech’s players know they’re coming.
The Hokies coaches have card keys to give them access to every player’s room at the Westin Diplomat hotel in Hollywood, Fla., and when the clock strikes 12, they’re not waiting for permission to enter.
“They could come in at any time. It could be 12:15 before they get there,” Hokies starting rover Dorian Porch said. “They come right in and make sure you’re there. No knocking. No nothing. They just walk in.”
