Altavista boys win, girls fall in finals at EMU
HARRISONBURG — Altavista’s boys basketball team cruised past a fatigued Riverheads squad 41-29 on Saturday in the Region B, Division 1, championship game at Eastern Mennonite University after defending Group A, Division 1, state champion Buffalo Gap dominated Altavista in the Region B, Division 1, girls final at EMU, holding the Colonels scoreless in the first quarter.

Colonel boys advance to Region B, Division 1 semifinals
Mike Poindexter drilled a 30-foot 3-pointer at the first-half buzzer to give Altavista’s boys basketball team a 27-26 lead and the momentum going into the second half, when the Colonels pulled past host Page County 57-46 in a Region B, Division 1 quarterfinal.

Altavista turns tables on Nelson, sweeping defending state champions
Mike Poindexter scored a game-high 15 points with nine rebounds and Jerrell Jordan and Kyle Andrews each added 14 points for Altavista’s boys basketball team, which beat Nelson County for the second time in four days.
The Colonels (12-9) held their guests to 36 points for the second time in a row in the first round of the Dogwood District tournament, winning 52-36 after beating the Governors (8-13) 65-36 in the regular-season finale on Friday.

A suspect in a stolen Dodge Charger led Altavista, Campbell County and state law enforcement on a game of hide-and-seek for several hours Wednesday evening, officials with the Campbell County Sheriff’s Office said.

Raiders stop Colonels inside 30 four times in 13-7 win
APPOMATTOX — In an otherwise defensive battle, Appomattox made the most of two long runs to slip past Altavista 13-7 in a Dogwood District battle on Friday. Appomattox quarterback Kenny Scott broke loose around the right end for a 61-yard run on the Raiders’ first possession, carrying the ball down to the Colonels’ 7 before scrambling in for the score off of a naked bootleg three plays later. Joe Reed set up a second Appomattox score with another 61-yard run, down to Altavista’s 6, before sweeping into the end zone from 9 yards for a 13-0 lead.

Rigler catches Morris with late kick at JF Invitational
FOREST — Like a cat stalking its prey, Altavista senior cross country runner Andrew Rigler crept up on Jefferson Forest’s Josh Morris and Hidden Valley’s Bryan Lewis before pouncing past them both in the last mile of Saturday’s Runnin’ with the Wolves Rocktoberfest varsity boys race, run on a new 3.1-mile course at Wolf Branch Farm.
William Campbell still too tough for Altavista
ALTAVISTA — For all of the improvements made by the Altavista’s football program under head coach Mike Scharnus, the Colonels were shown that they have a little more work to do when it comes to slugging it out with one of the Dogwood’s heavyweights.
William Campbell continued its dominance of its Dogwood rival Friday night, beating Altavista 28-3.

ALTAVISTA — When Carl Wilson gets finished with dialysis, he’s home in 10 minutes.
But until 2008, Wilson traveled 41 miles every three days from his home near Altavista to the Uva Dialysis Center in Lynchburg. And after each four-hour treatment he was back on the road again.
