Lancers’ Lewis outduels Terriers’ Mahoney in Region III softball
William Byrd pitcher Jessica Mahoney came into Monday’s Region III first-round softball game against Amherst highly regarded.
After all, the sophomore has pitched a perfect game, a combined no-hitter and routinely recorded double-digit strikeout totals this season. She was named the Blue Ridge District’s pitcher of the year.
But on Monday, she was overshadowed by Amherst’s junior pitcher Sydney Lewis, who threw a seven-hit shutout to lead the Lancers to a 6-0 win. Mahoney, meanwhile, went the distance and gave up five earned runs, five hits, two walks and hit two batters.

Amherst softball doubles up Rustburg in final
AMHERST — Ashley Hill’s two-run two-out double off the outstretched glove of Rustburg center fielder Elizabeth Hargis proved to be the difference in the Lancers’ 4-2 Seminole District softball tournament championship victory, Friday night at home.
Though she was thrown out at third trying to stretch the hit into a triple, Hill drove in Ashley Campbell and Nia Chiles, who had walked, pushing Amherst’s lead to 4-0 in the top of the sixth.
The Lancers, who upset top-seeded Jefferson Forest in the semifinals, knocked off the defending district tournament champion Red Devils (11-8) to clinch the No. 2 seed in Monday’s Region III tournament opener.

Heritage rallies past Amherst in Seminole baseball
Heritage rallied from a 4-1 deficit to post a 5-4 victory over visiting Amherst on Monday in the first round of the Seminole District baseball tournament.
Heritage (11-8) will face Rustburg in Wednesday’s nightcap at Jefferson Forest Middle School in the semifinals.
Both teams pushed across a run in the first, but the Lancers scored three more in the top of the second before the Pioneers rallied with two runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth.

Amherst’s boys basketball team overcame a 10-point halftime deficit before beating Heritage 54-53 in a Seminole District clash Friday night at home, clinching the top seed and home-court advantage in the newly split Region III, Division 4, playoffs.

Could Amherst come from behind? Twice? They hadn’t been put in this position since the season-opening loss to Brookville, but the Lancers were able to put it together, come back, and then hold off a strong Blue Streak team to win the Region III semifinal game 28-21, Friday night at Stinger Stadium.

Lancers, Rose roll over Cavaliers
AMHERST — Amherst proved to be the better study Friday night, scoring early and often in its 35-6 win over Jefferson Forest at home.
The Lancers (6-1, 2-1) produced on all but one possession while holding top running back Desmond Goode and the Cavaliers to four first downs and 81 yards of offense in the first half.
