Liberty’s Mario Cosby spent four years, including one redshirt season, playing various backup positions along the offensive line. But as his senior year approached, and starting positions opened, Cosby’s first impulse was to cut bait.

Glass tennis team rallies in memory of Nelson James
It’s been a season of healing and restoration for E.C. Glass’ boys tennis team, playing in memory and in the competitive spirit of Nelson James.
The former three-sport athlete and No. 3-seeded singles player, who died in a Sept. 27 car crash that also seriously injured fellow senior George Gianakos, left a void in the Hilltoppers’ lineup and in their collective hearts and minds.

Baserunning mistakes foil Glass against GW
Youth was on display Tuesday night in a Western Valley District baseball skirmish between E.C. Glass and GW-Danville, an agonizing 6-5 loss for the host Hilltoppers.
The Eagles (10-3, 2-2 WVD), who feature five sophomores, committed five errors in the field, leading to four of Glass’ five runs.
The Hilltoppers (3-6, 1-3), who have four freshmen and four sophomores on their 11-man roster, battled back from a 4-1 deficit to take a 5-4 lead in the fifth, scoring four runs with two outs against starting pitcher Josh Hackworth on two errors, a walk, a hit and a hit batter.

Midfielder Mawn, a world traveler, makes Hilltoppers go
E.C. Glass junior midfielder Jen Mawn plays soccer the way she has lived her life so far, always on the move.
Growing up in a military family, she and her older sister Lauren, who starred for the Hilltoppers from 2003-06, relocated multiple times before finally landing in Lynchburg when Jen was in the fifth grade.

Brizendine’s homer sparks Glass at LCA
Kent Brizendine hit a two-run home run in the top of the sixth inning off Liberty Christian Acad-emy starting pitcher Brock Wilson to lift E.C. Glass to a 6-5 non-district victory at LCA on Monday.
The Hilltoppers (1-2) scored all six of their runs in the last three innings, capped by a three-run seventh.

Continent-trotter Verburg finds a home on Glass track team
David Verburg is a man on the move, in more ways than one.
The E.C. Glass senior indoor and outdoor track standout was born in Oklahoma but didn’t live there long. His family moved to Tennessee, Kentucky, Wyoming and back to Kentucky before arriving in Lynchburg last spring.

Glass girls stun Patrick Henry, boys fall flat
Coming off an emotionally charged victory over cross-town rival Heritage on Saturday, E.C. Glass’ girls basketball team had a great carry-over effect in Tuesday night’s stunning upset of Western Valley District power Patrick Henry.
The Hilltoppers’ boys team, on the other hand, followed its big win over the Pioneers with a flop against the Patriots in the nightcap.

Glass exits Western Valley with tough loss to FC
E.C. Glass’ exit from the Western Valley District was as agonizing as imagineable, Friday night at City Stadium, a 20-14 loss to Franklin County.
The Hilltoppers, who will join the Seminole District next fall, had trimmed the Eagles’ lead to six points on an explosive 13-yard run by fourth quarterback Lamont Hamlette, a JV call-up, with 3 minutes, 24 seconds to go.

Glass golfer Bost wins All-American Cup
E.C. Glass senior Daniel Bost shot a 74 to win The Society of Seven Sports Club’s second annual All-American Cup, featuring many of the top-seeded golfers from all of the area’s high schools, Saturday at Poplar Grove in Amherst.
