Cavaliers rout Blue Streaks 16-4 in baseball

FOREST — Opportunistic hitting and an efficient pitching performance by Jefferson Forest junior southpaw Erik Heiligenstadt helped the Cavaliers cruise past Harrisonburg 16-4 in Tuesday night’s Region III quarterfinal.

JF, coming off a dramatic 6-5 loss to Rustburg in Friday’s Seminole District championship game, bounced back in a big way, racking up 11 hits. The Cavaliers would have put the 10-run rule into effect in the fifth, but there isn’t one in postseason play.

JF shuts out SR in Seminole girls soccer title rematch

AMHERST — After missing multiple one-on-one opportunities with Staunton River goalkeeper Moira Guzi, Jefferson Forest finally slipped one past the stingy sophomore midway through the second half of Friday’s Seminole District girls soccer tournament final.

Sophomore forward Emilee McDaniel sent a long ball from the left side toward the center of the goalie box. The ball skidded past Guzi and sophomore midfielder Courtney Zongrone was there to finish it off on the goal line for the game’s only score.

Hayes, DeWitt, Duff form JF’s scoring machine

FOREST — E.C. Glass’ girls soccer team features the three-headed monster of sophomores Dessi Dupuy, Ashlea Caylor and Nikki Good on attack.

Jefferson Forest counters with nearly as dangerous a duo of sophomore Chelsea Hayes (21 goals) and senior Cameron DeWitt (11 goals, 8 assists). They get plenty of support from fellow senior forward Taylor Duff, who had a goal and four assists in Wednesday’s 7-1 Seminole District semifinal win over Amherst.

“Chelsea’s a very polished striker who strikes fear in the rest of the district, I think, much the same way Dessi Dupuy from Glass does to us,” JF coach Stan Golon said. “At any point in time, she can burn you.

For today’s Group AA state competition at Virginia’s Fitness and Aquatics Center, they are fully focused on qualifying for Saturday’s championship finals with top-eight preliminary finishes.
