When the Big South’s coaches and media gathered in a Charlotte, N.C., hotel last month, Liberty coach Danny Rocco shared his excitement with reporters about his fourth Flames’ team.

Liberty’s Mario Cosby spent four years, including one redshirt season, playing various backup positions along the offensive line. But as his senior year approached, and starting positions opened, Cosby’s first impulse was to cut bait.

The four-year contract is signed. The offseason mini-camps and team activities are over. Now, finally, Rashad Jennings is going to training camp.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Once again, Liberty’s football program will benefit from an influx of Division I transfers.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Mike Brown arrived at Friday’s Big South media day in a dark gray suit with a pressed black shirt and tie, looking every bit the part of a leader. A Liberty sophomore, Brown earned that role during spring practice, when he impressed Flames coach Danny Rocco so much that he made Brown one of six team captains.

After the 2008 season, Heritage High running back Korrey Davis had narrowed his choices to two schools: Massachusetts and Liberty. The chance to play for a perennial playoff contender in one of the nation’s top FCS conferences — the CAA — was too tantalizing to pass up, so Davis packed his bags for Amherst, Mass., and spent a year playing for the Minutemen.

Liberty University quarterback Brock Smith admits he was taken aback the first time Ben Shipps approached him and asked about trying out for the football team. Smith looked at Shipps and noticed he had had a wisp of flesh and bone for a left arm, and a right arm that ended at the elbow.
