Liberty University has considered taking ownership of the financially struggling National D-Day Memorial after being approached by officials from the Bedford landmark, Chancellor Jerry Falwell Jr. said Wednesday.

The Department of Environmental Quality again has proposed fining Liberty University for wetland and stream damage done during 2007 construction.

The headline in our newspaper Friday morning — the very top headline, no less — told the world: “LU pulls plug on Democratic club.”

In terms of shock value, this was the equivalent of “VMI freshmen forced to do pushups” or “Taliban leaders oppose plans for new disco.” The mystery here is not that Liberty University decided to disassociate itself from the college’s Democratic club, but that the club was ever allowed to exist in the first place.

Liberty University officials insisted Friday that they revoked recognition of the College Democrats club for religious reasons and not political ones, and they weren’t trying to stifle free speech.
