Lynchburg City Council will alter its schedule starting in the fall in deference to Councilman Ceasor Johnson.

City Council is entering the homestretch of a lengthy school board appointment process.

The city has accepted a $350,000 state grant for a 29-acre park planned for inside the Lynchpin Industrial Park on Lakeside Drive.

Lynchburg City Council will convene at 7:30 p.m. today in City Hall, 900 Church St., for a regular business meeting. Items on the agenda include:

City Councilman Jeff Helgeson said Wednesday he finds it “ironic” that the schools are offering to take a budget cut on the heels of his own, failed proposal to reduce local education spending.

The Lynchburg School Board is reducing its budget request to the city by $500,000, in part to give officials the option of restoring a pending 3 percent pay cut for city employees.

Lynchburg City Council does not appear to have changed its mind about the new city budget, making it highly unlikely any last-minute amendments will be made when the matter comes to a vote on Tuesday.

The Lynchburg Fire Fighters Association says public safety officers should face the same pay cuts as all other city employees.

A last-minute attempt to alter the city budget led to a heated dispute Tuesday during what has traditionally been an uneventful vote.

Lynchburg City Council will hold a public hearing tonight to solicit community input on the three school board terms that expire this June.

Lynchburg City Council will discuss five proposed low-income housing projects during a meeting Tuesday.

Each project is pursuing federal tax credits under a program supporting low-income housing. The city is allowed to submit comments as part of that process. In some cases, a lack of city support can harm a project’s chances of succeeding.

Lynchburg City Council is currently soliciting applications for school board.

Interested candidates must submit an application prior to council’s May 12 public hearing where community members, including potential board members, will have an opportunity to speak.
