The Fire Department beats the Police Department, 8-7 in the Guns-N-Hoses Charity Softball Game

Just desserts were served up in more ways than one Sunday during a charity softball game between Lynchburg’s police and fire departments.
The firefighters, dressed appropriately in red shirts, used their first turn on the pitcher’s mound to toss, not a ball, but rather a surprise doughnut out to the officer at bat.

Central Virginia Area Agency on Aging dining center looks for best way to reach elderly

MADISON HEIGHTS — In the early morning, even Dixie Airport Road is quiet, but Mary Mathisen is already busy in the fellowship hall of Emmanuel Church of the Nazarene.
It’s well before 8 a.m. and with hands encased in transparent plastic gloves, she puts canned orange slices into small Styrofoam cups with covers. Slices of frozen bread are slipped into per-person sized wrappers.
Mathisen is site manager for the Madison Heights dining center established by the Lynchburg-based Central Virginia Area Agency on Aging.

Dunbar High School Legacy Fund scholarship to help city students’ futures

Two Lynchburg students recently became the first recipients of the Dunbar High School Legacy Fund scholarship, created to remember the school’s rich history and tight-knit community.
For 47 years, Dunbar helped provide the city’s black students opportunity and education.
Now the scholarship, established by Dunbar High School’s class of 1965, will help provide opportunity and education to Heritage High School grad Damian Booker and E.C. Glass High School grad Lewedwyn Kippur Taylor.
