Chatham baseball knocks Nelson out in Dogwood semis
CHATHAM — Any concerns Chatham coach Chad Anderson had about his team’s offense slowing down were quickly quashed. Gavin Hylton and Drew Kirks smashed back-to-back home runs in the first inning as Chatham rolled Nelson County 12-3 in the Dogwood District semifinals on Wednesday.
“This week is really important for us to get hot going into the regional tournament …,” said Anderson, whose Cavaliers have already secured a spot in next week’s Region B tournament.
The Cavaliers (18-2), who had played only once a week for the past two weeks, didn’t show any signs of sluggishness despite their light schedule at the end of the regular season.

Gretna softball routs NC, sets up semifinal with WC
GRETNA — Gretna’s offensive explosion from the regular season finale carried over into the Dogwood District tournament as the Hawks scored 13 runs on 10 hits and easily dispatched No. 6-seed Nelson County 13-0 on Monday in the tournament’s first round.
Gretna (13-5) advances to the second round of the Dogwood District tournament and will play at William Campbell on Wednesday at 6 p.m. The second-seeded Generals defeated seventh-seeded Dan River 12-0 on Monday. The Hawks and Generals split the two regular season meetings, winning on the other’s home field.

Homicide weapon found, authorities say
Less than 24 hours after two Nelson County men were charged with first-degree murder in connection with last week’s stabbing death of a 73-year-old Afton woman, authorities said they have found the weapon they believe was used.

Nelson track coach charged with soliciting sex from a juvenile
A track coach at Nelson County High School who resigned on Monday was charged on Tuesday with felony computer solicitation of a juvenile, school and law enforcement officials said.
