Amherst softball doubles up Rustburg in final

AMHERST — Ashley Hill’s two-run two-out double off the outstretched glove of Rustburg center fielder Elizabeth Hargis proved to be the difference in the Lancers’ 4-2 Seminole District softball tournament championship victory, Friday night at home.

Though she was thrown out at third trying to stretch the hit into a triple, Hill drove in Ashley Campbell and Nia Chiles, who had walked, pushing Amherst’s lead to 4-0 in the top of the sixth.

The Lancers, who upset top-seeded Jefferson Forest in the semifinals, knocked off the defending district tournament champion Red Devils (11-8) to clinch the No. 2 seed in Monday’s Region III tournament opener.
