Del. Shannon Valentine and Republican Scott Garrett debated taxes, how to create jobs, and ways to solve transportation needs Monday night before nearly 200 people at a League of Women Voters forum.

Del. Shannon Valentine, D-Lynchburg, and Republican Scott Garrett faced off in a debate Monday, trading jabs about each other’s voting records — Valentine’s in the House of Delegates, and Garrett’s on Lynchburg City Council.

In an election between a surgeon and an incumbent legislator who is married to a doctor, Lynchburg residents can expect TV commercials — a Hill City rarity in local races — in addition to the usual door-knocking campaigners.

Lynchburg City Councilman Scott Garrett won the Republican nomination Tuesday night to run for the House of Delegates against incumbent Del. Shannon Valentine.

At least $130,000 has been raised by Lynchburg’s two candidates for the Republican nomination for the House of Delegates, a race that will be decided in tomorrow’s primary election.
