Tech to play at FedEx Field again in 2012

It appears Virginia Tech’s football team won’t have to make a trip to Cincinnati in 2012 as earlier planned. The two teams, who met in last season’s Orange Bowl, will face off instead at FedEx Field in Landover, Md., according to a written release.

The date, time and ticket information wasn’t provided. It’ll be the third game for the Hokies at the home stadium of the Washington Redskins. Tech opened the season at FedEx Field in 2004 against Southern Cal and is scheduled to play Boise State there on Oct. 2, 2010.

The Hokies have a strong fan base in the Northern Virginia/Washington D.C./Maryland area. Tech sup-porters came out in full force on Saturday when the Hokies took on Maryland in College Park, Md.

“It’s evident by all our fans who turned out for the Maryland game this weekend, we’ve got a lot of fans in that area, and a lot of people who support the Hokies can get there,” Tech coach Frank Beamer said during his Monday teleconference. “I think that’s a good thing for us.”

GAME TIMES ANNOUNCED

Saturday’s home finale against N.C. State is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. and will be televised on ESPNU. Tech’s season finale at Virginia on Nov. 28 will also kick off at 3:30 p.m. and will be shown on ESPN.
