Appomattox boys third, girls fourth in Group A state meet

Appomattox’s boys track and field team placed third with 38 points and its girls finished fourth with 32 at Saturday’s Group A state championship meet at Radford University.
Altavista’s boys, on the strength of Andrew Rigler’s state title in the 800-meter run (1 minute, 59.80 seconds) and second-place showing in the 1,600 (4:29.10), placed sixth with 31 points. The Colonels’ 400-meter relay team of Chris Clark, Jamison Robinson, Jawaad Douglas and Tavone Payne finished runner-up to Lancaster in 44.56. Payne also placed fourth in the 200 in 22.59.
For Appomattox, Kendrick Scott won the long jump with a leap of 23 feet, 2 inches, placed second in the 200 meters in 22.38 and third in the 100 in 10.88 after qualifying first in 10.83. Dalton Bennett came in third in the 400 in 51.39 and also anchored the second-place 1,600-meter relay team (3:27.07), following Cameron Mosely, Leander Robinson and Christopher Thornton.
The Raiders’ girls experienced tremendous success in the relays, with the 1,600-meter team of Jessica Robertson, Megan Campbell, Mia Morse and Ariel Wade winning in 4:09.38 and the 400-meter team of Destinee Walker, DeShonda Revely, LaShae Jackson and Wade finishing second in 50.63.
Appomattox’s Jackson and Wade finished fourth (26.73) and sixth (27.09), respectively in the 200 and Campbell was fourth in the 400 in 1:00.97.
Altavista’s KiKi Crews placed third in the 100-meter dash in 12.55 and Colonel teammate Jessica Myer was fourth in the 800 in 2:25.95 to account for their team’s 11 points. Nelson County’s Kate Collins finished fourth in the 100 hurdles in 17.03 and Erica Stowe came in fifth in the 400 in 1:01.22 to score the Governors’ nine team points.
Gretna’s Bennett Fulper won the shot put with a heave of 53 feet, 1¼ inches and the Hawks’ Niaya Griffin placed third in the girls high jump by clearing 5-1.
William Campbell’s Mike Barbour finished fifth in the discus with a throw of 139-4.

Amherst’s Tinsley advances
Amherst graduate Marshall Tinsley made it through the Roanoke zone in his attempt to qualify for the Virginia State Amateur and Virginia State Open golf tournaments, set for June 23 to 27 at Cedar Point in Suffolk and July 16 to 19 at Independence Golf Club in Richmond, respectively.
Tinsley shot a 4-under par 140 to place third at Saturday’s 36-hole Virginia State Golf Association Amateur Championship zone qualifying at Ashley Plantation in Daleville.
