Want political civility? Back Rasoul
It was refreshing to read a recent letter calling for more civility in our political dialogue. The future looks pretty bleak if our political discourse continues to be dominated by extreme ideologues. This kind of rhetoric leads to a lot of name-calling and with no progress. Consider the negative letters generated when Republican Preston Bryant endorsed the Democratic candidate Mark Warner. Does every politician have to be a partisan hack?

Polls clearly indicate that most Americans feel that our country is headed in the wrong direction. If we really want to change we need new representatives who can work across party lines. Leaders who will put the needs of the people above blind party loyalty and the pressures of special interests. Sending the same people back to Washington will just yield more of the same bickering with no progress in addressing the nation’s problems. Most of the incumbents in both parties are programmed to make sure that the other party (the enemy) doesn’t get credit for anything regardless of the public need or the merits of the proposal.
I encourage you to vote for Sam Rasoul for Virginia’s Sixth Congressional District this November. Rasoul is a leader who can and will work effectively with people of all political persuasions to get things done. Although he has formulated plans for dealing with the concerns of healthcare, foreign oil dependence, new job creation and the myriad of other problems facing our nation, he has always solicited and continues to seek input from the public. He’s one of these rare politicians who appreciate the value of listening to people, even those with a different point of view.
Let’s get serious about a new direction. Join me in supporting him for Congress.

Regarding the July 26 letter about the Safe Return program for people with Alzheimer’s, I would like to say how much comfort such programs bring to the caregivers caring for individuals, often their own loved ones, suffering with this disease.
I would like to follow with information about another program that is available to our community, Lynchburg Project Lifesaver. Available to the Lynchburg community, this is a life-saving search and rescue program that was implemented in April 2002 by the joint efforts of the Lynchburg Sheriff’s Office, Lynchburg Police Department and the Lynchburg Lifesaving Crew under the direction of Sheriff Ron Gillispie.
Using state-of-the-art technology and a specially trained search and rescue team, this program brings peace of mind to caregivers caring for individuals suffering with Alzheimer’s, Autism, Down syndrome and other cognitive dysfunctions who have a tendency to wander and become lost.
People who are part of the Project Lifesaver program wear a personalized bracelet that emits a tracking signal. When caregivers notify 9-1-1 that the person is missing, a search-and-rescue team is dispatched to the wanderer’s area and begins the search with the mobile locater tracking system. Officers have been trained in air search, vehicle search and ground search. With this innovative equipment, search times have been reduced from hours and days to minutes. In hundreds of searches, there have been no reported serious injuries or deaths. Recovery times average less than 30 minutes.
It is our goal is that everyone in our community has information regarding the options and what tools are available to assist them during this difficult time.
