A fresh batch of links to peruse while contemplating this fact: Angola played Team USA tougher than anyone in the preliminary round of the Olympic men's basketball tournament. Congrats, Germany, on keeping it within 50 this morning ...
COASTAL CAROLINA: The Myrtle Beach Sun News' Travis Sawchik takes a look at the four former Chanticleers currently in the NFL.
Coastal got the go-ahead to build its long-anticipated field house last week, Sawchik reports.
In this notebook, there's word that Jamar Anderson has moved from slot receiver to the outside, where he'll occupy Jerome Simpson's old spot.
Also, Sawchik gives his impression of Coastal's most recent scrimmage in this blog.
Chris Fischer of the Florence Morning News reports that the scrimmage yielded no answers for Coastal's muddled quarterback situation.
The Charleston Post & Courier previews the Chanticleers' season here.
LIBERTY: Former Flame Vince Redd is quoted heavily in this Boston Globe piece about the mayhem caused by tipped passes. Redd made four tackles (two solo) and picked up a sack in New England's preseason loss to Tampa Bay Saturday. He's listed third on the latest Patriot depth chart at outside linebacker, behind Mike Vrabel and Pierre Woods. Two big days loom for Redd (and all rookies and fringe players) -- Aug. 26, the day rosters are cut to 75 players, and Aug. 30, the day rosters are cut to the NFL maximum 53 for the regular season. My guess is that Redd will survive the first one. The second one will probably be a little scary for the former Flame, though.
If it seems we're light on the links from the rest of the conference, well, uh, there are none. No news items could be found on VMI, Presbyterian, Stony Brook, Charleston Southern or Gardner-Webb. People seem to think that the addition of Stony Brook to the Big South will give the league some sort of media presence in New York, but it seems to me that the news outlets up there largely ignore the Seawolves. Maybe that will change come the start of the season. Who knows?
I attended VMI's (rainy) media day last Friday, and I'll have a story on former Jefferson Forest standout Ben Brandt's move from the defensive line to the offensive line, along with a preview of the rest of the Big South's teams. Look for both in Sunday's News & Advance.
Also, check in every day for web-only reports and previews on Liberty's non-revenue sports.
