Air conditioning is down in the press box. Not good, since it according to the gauge on the Dodge Stratus coming in, it's 91 degrees outside. I'll persevere.
A couple of pre-game notes and observations:
* A good crowd was forming outside even at 4:30 p.m. The parking lot is packed with students in red t-shirts. That's the them that's being pushed around here this season. Red skirts were added to the temporary luxury boxes on the home side of the stadium, and about 200 red seats were added behind the end zone opposite the Williams operations center. The goal is to fit as many fans in red as possible close to the field. Looks great on TV.
* FCS football has kind of come back to Earth this weekend. Very few of the FCS-FBS matchups have been remotely competitive. Appalachian State was run off the field at LSU. Georgia Southern never had a shot at Georgia. Coastal Carolina was completely overmatched at Penn State. Youngstown State had five (!) first downs at Ohio State. The only team representing this subdivision well right now is Delaware, which as I type is trailing Maryland 7-0 at the break. (Actually, Towson's hanging in there at Navy, too.) Still, it's clear the powers in FBS remember the Appalachian State-Michigan game from a year ago, and no one is taking FCS opponents lightly.
* A few depth chart changes this week:
-- With Matt Lambros continuing to nurse a thumb injury, Chris Summers moves to No. 2 at X receiver.
-- Mario Cosby jumps past Spencer Hodges to No. 2 at center, partly because Hodges has struggled at practice and partly because Hodges is currently academically ineligible, LU coach Danny Rocco said Thursday.
-- Asa Chapman moves to No. 2 NG ahead of Jay Coady.
-- Madadou Balde is No. 2 at WLB and Doncel Bolt No. 2 at MLB.
-- Brandon Saunders jumps to No. 2 behind Kent Hicks at CB.
* Still waiting on word from the Patriots on whether or not former Flames linebacker Vince Redd made the 53-man roster. The latest Boston Globe projection has Redd on the outside looking in.
