A 17-year-old boy was killed by his younger brother Monday evening near Chamblissburg in Bedford County, according to the sheriff’s office.

Maj. Ricky Gardner said the shooting appeared to be an accident, but is being investigated.

The shooting was reported around 5:20 p.m. In a news release from the sheriff’s office, Gardner noted the boy was shot in the chest with a rifle. He was flown from his home at 3856 Saunders Grove Drive by Life-Guard helicopter to Roanoke Memorial Hospital around 6 p.m. where he died, Gardner wrote.

The release noted that the boys’ 16-year-old sister was also at home at the time. The younger boy’s age was not released.

“Due to the fact that all involved are juveniles, no names will be released,” Gardner wrote.
