APPOMATTOX — Appomattox County supervisors want the school board to compile a multi-year timeline for millions of dollars of needed repairs and renovations to county schools.
That’s the outcome of Tuesday’s joint work session.
“Just think of this as a roadmap to get us started,” said Concord District Supervisor Gary Tanner. “It needs to be segmented over 20 to 25 years, realistically, with the money we’ll have coming in.”
How much the county will be able to afford will depend on how much state revenue will be slashed in coming weeks, said Board of Supervisors Chairman William Craft.
Appomattox school superintendent Aldridge Boone told supervisors that the most urgent priorities are fixing the primary school’s roof, which has numerous leaks, and repairing the high school’s electrical system. Many other needed repairs weren’t even included in the report, he added.
The total cost to repairs and renovations outlined in a report could be almost $72 million, according to the study. The county’s total fiscal year 2009 budget was $37 million, with the schools receiving $22 million.
