A 24-year-old construction worker fell through an airplane hangar’s skylight early Monday afternoon at the Lynchburg Regional Airport.
The worker was airlifted to Lynchburg General Hospital and was in critical condition Monday evening, said Lynchburg Police Captain Wayne Duff.
Airport Director Mark Courtney said the injured man was working on the roof of one of the airport’s hangars. BTB Construction, based on Timberlake Road in Lynchburg, had been hired to perform some roof repairs, including replacing the skylights.
Courtney said Monday was the first day of the work being performed.
The skylights, which cannot support much weight, had been marked in the morning, he said. “It was after the lunch break today that one of the workers on the roof somehow stepped on one of the skylights.”
Courtney said the worker fell about 25 feet to the hangar floor, hitting the back edge of an airplane’s wing on the way down. He was seriously injured, Courtney said.
Emergency crews received a call on the incident at 12:52 p.m., Duff said.
The worker, whom Duff would not name, was airlifted to Lynchburg General Hospital.
Lynchburg police as well as Campbell County public safety crews responded. The airport is in Campbell County but is managed by the city of Lynchburg.
Jennifer Wester, spokeswoman for the Virginia Department of Labor and Industry, said the agency has opened a case to investigate the incident.
Locally, the Campbell County Sheriff’s office is leading an investigation.
