State extending unemployment benefits

»  Comments | Post a Comment

The Virginia Employment Commission is temporarily hiring staff to handle an increasing number of applications for unemployment benefits.

The commission said in a news release Monday that it is “examining new strategies to provide services as numerous employers are laying off large numbers of staff.”

The commission will add about 30 to 40 positions statewide using federal money, which also is paying for more weeks of unemployment benefits.

The Unemployment Compensation Extension Act, which became a federal law Nov. 21, extends unemployment compensation for up to seven weeks after benefits usually would end.

On Monday the commission mailed out Emergency Unemployment Compensa-tion applications to people who are eligible for the extension of benefits.

People who have exhausted their unemployment benefits and are still unemployed must fill out the form and return it to the Virginia Employment Commission.

It will be processed about two weeks later, according to a commission news release.
