Jordan Anderson loves to draw, paint, color, sculpt Play-Doh — and do just about anything with an artistic edge.
“If you give her some dried macaroni, she’ll make something out of it,” said her mom, Jenny Anderson.
And others are taking notice.
The 6-year-old first-grader at Dearington Elementary School for Innovation recently was one of seven Lynchburg City School students recognized by the Optimist Club of Lynchburg.
The club awarded each winner with a $100 savings bond.
Jordan took the Art Award, given to a student for “exceptional imagination and skill,” according to the Lynchburg City Schools Web site. Jordan’s teacher nominated her for the contest for her drawing of an opening drawbridge.
“She got a little more creative,” Jordan’s mother said, “And she drew a father and son down on the water fishing.”
Jordan and her 8-year-old brother Logan both inherited their artistic flair from their mom’s side.
Their grandfather and great grandmother both were artists, Jenny Anderson said.
“They’re usually getting in trouble for it,” she said, laughing about the times Jordan cut her 3-year-old sister’s hair and glued tissue paper to her bedroom walls as a decoration.
“Even if they’re writing their name, they have to make some picture out of it,” she said of both Jordan and Logan. “The whole house is filled with drawings — you can’t keep up with it.”
Jordan said her favorite form of artwork is painting, but she also likes drawing, coloring, crocheting and making jewelry.
“I like to paint flowers and butterflies, and mountains,” she said.
Jenny Anderson said Jordan was “so proud” to win the award.
“This has been a really neat thing for her,” she said. “I’m really proud of her.”
