For area residents with business in Washington, D.C., or residents from the nation’s capital with ties to Lynchburg, a second rail line would be a more practical option than taking the current line.
That’s mostly because of the earlier departure time.
Emily Crowder came in from D.C. on Thursday night to visit family.
Crowder, who returns to Lynchburg frequently to visit her family, said she’d appreciate the extra hour of time she would have with the new service.
“For me, the only option I have is to leave Washington, D.C., at 6:30 at night and get in at 10, and that isn’t ideal for anybody’s schedule. So it would be a nice to have another option.”
The new line would leave Lynchburg at about 5 a.m. and arrive in Washington at 9. On the return trip, passengers would pull into Lynchburg at about 8:25 p.m.
Such a schedule could only be confirmed with the OK of Norfolk Southern.
Dan Andrews lives in Roanoke and said he would be interested in the new service if it came to fruition.
“I would rather drive (into Lynchburg) and take the train into D.C. when we would want to go there,” he said.
“It would make it a lot easier.”
The new line, instead of traveling from New Orleans to New York, would use Lynchburg as its southernmost stop.
