Training for court-appointed advocates serving abused and neglected foster children will start Jan. 12.
The program is offered as a three-credit course on Mondays from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Central Virginia Community College’s Lynchburg campus. The course is open to the public and can also provide teacher recertification and continuing education credit.
Volunteers for CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) of Central Virginia encourage and help children from unsafe homes who have entered the foster care system.
The nonprofit recruits and supports volunteers to advocate for children involved in juvenile court proceedings in the 24th Judicial District, including the cities of Lynchburg and Bedford and Amherst, Bedford, Campbell and Nelson counties.
Jane Francis, CASA director, said it does not take any education or special qualifications but “just a love of children and a willingness to be their voice in court.”
