Lynchburg native Lemuel Lewis was appointed chairman of the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond’s Board of Directors, the system’s board of governors announced Monday.
Lewis, a 1965 graduate of Dunbar High School, has been a director of the Fed’s Richmond-based Fifth District board since December 2004.
He is the son of Lynchburg resident Minnie Lewis and the late Charles Lewis.
Lewis begins his term as chairman Jan. 1. He has been deputy chairman for two years, and succeeds Thomas Mackell Jr. of Warrenton.
The Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond is one of 12 District Reserve Banks that, together with the Board of Governors in Washington, D.C., make up the Federal Reserve System.
The Fifth Federal Reserve District includes the District of Columbia, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, and most of West Virginia.
Lewis is founder and president of LocalWeather.com, a web-based, privately held media company in Suffolk.
Lewis previously was executive vice president and chief financial officer for the multime-dia Landmark Communications Inc. in Norfolk, where his career spanned 26 years before he retired in 2006.
Lewis is a director of Markel Corp. of Richmond and Dollar Tree Stores Inc. of Suffolk. He is a trustee of the Virginia Health Care Foundation, a not-for-profit organization that seeks to improve primary health care for Virginia’s uninsured population.
He also serves on the boards of Virginia Wesleyan College and the Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges.
He received a B.A. in economics from the University of Virginia and an M.B.A. from its Graduate School of Business in 1972.
Lewis previously served a four-year term on the Board of Visitors of the University of Virginia and is a former trustee of the Darden School Foundation.
He and his wife, Sandra, live in Suffolk and have a daughter, Tanya.
