Former Gov. Jim Gilmore will be in Lynchburg on Friday for campaign appearances at Liberty University.
Gilmore, a Republican candidate for U.S. Senate, will attend the school's convocation in the morning, then speak to the school's chapter of College Republicans later that day, said Ana Gamonal, communications director for the campaign.
The former governor is not the guest speaker at convocation, said Barry Moore, LU vice president of university relations.
"However, the chancellor (Jerry Falwell Jr.) will introduce him and give him the opportunity for a few brief comments," Moore said.
At the 6 p.m. meeting with students, Gilmore likely will speak about his campaign, national security, and the economy, Gamonal said.
Gilmore faces opposition from Del. Robert G. Marshall, R-Prince William, for the Republican nomination and to challenge former Gov. Mark Warner, the Democratic contender, for the seat being vacated by U.S. Sen. John Warner, R-Va.
Andrew Chesnut, first vice chair of the College Republicans, said the group was "delighted" to host Gilmore.
Their meetings are generally about an hour long, he said, and Gilmore will have time to speak and answer questions.
Stephen Witham, faculty advisor for the College Republicans, said the
university's Helms School of Government will host a private reception and meet-and- greet with Gilmore at 5 p.m.
He expects that Gilmore may ask club members for campaign assistance, he said.
"Typically, whenever anyone running for office comes to speak to a group of young people, they would like help with the campaign," he said. "That's what College Republicans is all about."
Chesnut said he hopes for a good turnout at the club meeting, which will be held in room 1101 of the DeMoss Learning Center.
"We've been trying to get the word out," he said. "It's open to anyone who wants to come."
