Woman hospitalized after Sea-Doo explodes at Smith Mountain Lake

An exploding Sea-Doo watercraft on Smith Mountain Lake sent a woman to the hospital yesterday, authorities said.

Conservation police Lieutenant Karl Martin said it happened around 10:30 a.m. Wednesday on the Franklin County side of the lake.

Martin said a woman tried to start her Sea-Doo when it exploded.

He said the force of the blast knocked her off the personal watercraft and she landed on or near a dock.

Martin said the received “non-life-threatening injuries.”

Martin said the 38-year-old woman is from Staunton but declined to reveal her identity.
