ACHIEVEMENTS
Appomattox
- Appomattox Elementary School students Shydasha Chestnut and Jordan Eagle were recently named ‘All-Star Readers.’
- The Appomattox Middle School Concert Band was awarded a trophy for earning an ‘Excellent’ rating during the Kings Dominion Concert Band, Orchestra and Jazz Band Festival held May 18 at Hanover High School in Mechanicsville. The AMS Concert Band performed three pieces of standard band repertoire for middle and early high school students.
Bedford
- Liberty High School student Katherine Gaither recently earned National Merit recognition and met the requirements to enter the 2009 National Merit Scholarship Program.
- The Liberty Young Farmer Program of Liberty High School recently won the State Post Secondary Education category of the Virginia Association of Agricultural Educators. A plaque will be awarded at the State Agricultural Teachers Conference to be held in July at Virginia Tech.
- Liberty High School Future Farmers of America members Elizabeth Goff, Chris Johnson and Kelly Reedy competed in the State Horse Judging Contest held May 3 at Bridgewater College.
- Liberty High School student Cam Harrison recently won the HUB Federation Small Engines Troubleshooting Contest held May 8 at Randolph Henry High School. This is the second year a Liberty student has won this event.
- The following Otter River Elementary School students won awards at the Central Virginia Regional Science Fair held May 13 at the Central Virginia Governor’s School: Carter Villa, first place in the chemistry category, and Max Jennings, Scientific American Award. Villa and Jennings, both fifth-graders, competed against students in grades 5-8.
Campbell
- Altavista High School senior Travis Simpson was recently awarded a $1,000 ‘Student of Integrity Scholarship Award.’ This award, presented by the Better Business Bureau of Western Virginia, honors high school seniors who personify ethics through leadership, community service, overall personal integrity and academic history.
Lynchburg
- The following Heritage High School students were named winners in the art category of the 2008 Holocaust Education Foundation’s Holocaust Awareness Contest: Conrad Huband, first place, Tim Howell, second, and Whitney Williams, honorable mention.
- The following E.C. Glass High School students were named winners in the 2008 Holocaust Education Foundation’s Holocaust Awareness Contest: McKensie Miller, second place, and Gwen Garrett, Carly Laurenson and Colleen Bowen, honorable mentions, art category; Mel Dunn, first place, Chad Shank, second, Lindsey Byers, third, and Mark Armstrong, honorable mention, Gerda Weissmann Klein Awards for poetry; Jeffrey Ayers, first place, Shelby Adgerson, second, Andrew Daniels, third, and Angela Avance, Steffi Wells, Elizabeth Ware and Seneca Tisdale, honorable mentions, Walter Storozum Awards for poetry; Karl Speer, first place, Catherine Burnett, second, Johanna Lemon, third, and Andeleeb Rahman and Jamie Chong, honorable mentions, Gerda Weissmann Klein Awards for prose; and Klan Hagan, first place, Ranica Fitch, second, Jade Covington, third, and Niall Hagan, honorable mention, Walter Storozum Awards for prose.
- The following Linkhorne Middle School students were named winners in the 2008 Holocaust Education Foundation’s Holocaust Awareness Contest: Samantha Wright, first place, art category; Danielle Gibbons, first place, Lucas Wheelock, second, and Stephen Green, third, Gerda Weissmann Klein Awards for poetry; and Bryan Abbott, first place, Kris Spinner, second, and Paige Johnson, third, Walter Storozum Award for poetry.
- T.C. Miller Elementary School for Innovation student Matthew Cotton recently won the statewide Epilepsy Foundation of Virginia ‘Use a Helmet: Prevent Epilepsy’ contest. His drawing was selected from more than 300 entries statewide.
- E.C. Glass High School senior Morgan Gardner was recently awarded the Lynchburg Community Service Scholarship by the Lynchburg Jr. Women’s Club. Gardner worked more than 300 hours as a volunteer with the Boonsboro Volunteer Fire Department while maintaining honor roll grades. The scholarship requires that the recipient maintain a minimum grade point average of 2.5 and complete at least 30 documented volunteer service hours, completed during the last two academic years. Gardner will attend the University of Alabama in the fall.
- Nathan Richards, a graduating senior at E.C. Glass High School, was one of 10 Virginia students who received a $1,000 scholarship from Allstate Insurance Co. during an awards luncheon held May 19 at the Omni Hotel in Charlottesville. Allstate partnered with the Virginia High School League to recognize exceptional students for their scholastic and athletic achievements. Richards has a 4.4 grade point average and is a member of the National Spanish Honor Society, the Mathematics Honor Society and the National Honor Society. He will study biology at Yale University in the fall.
Nelson
- Nelson County High School senior Caleb Saunders was named a recipient of the 2008 Pamplin Leader Award. This one year, $1,000 tuition scholarship to Virginia Tech is awarded annually to a top student from each public high school in Virginia. The award acknowledges students with a record of outstanding academic achievement, a commitment to community service and leadership experience.
Private Schools
- Holy Cross Regional Catholic School sixth-grader Jacob Laurent participated on a winning team at the Odyssey of the Mind state competition held April 5 at Park View High School in Sterling. The team was comprised of seven students from Forest Middle School, Holy Cross and Liberty Christian Academy. The team will compete in the World Finals on May 31 at the University of Maryland.
- James River Day School student Lee Gardner took third place in the 17th annual AAA School Safety Patrol Essay Contest. Gardner will receive a plaque and a $50 U.S. Savings Bond. This year’s contest received a record number of 140 entries from 18 different schools in Virginia.
- Holy Cross Regional Catholic School third-grader Brooke Manion recently won the Memorial Day Weekend North Carolina Beach Buggy Association Jr. Fishing Tournament. Manion caught an 11-ounce bluefish.
