Amherst County will have two new assistant superintendents July 1. The county school board approved the recommended candidates Thursday evening.
Julie Rogers, currently Roanoke City Schools’ director of instructional programs, was named assistant superintendent for curriculum, instruction and assessment. Mark Lineburg, Radford High School principal, will become assistant superintendent for operations.
Rogers will replace the position previously held by Brian Ratliff, who was selected to become superintendent in April following John Walker’s announcement to step down.
“I’m excited to be here,” Rogers said after Thursday’s meeting. “I hope to make a contribution to Amherst County Public Schools.”
Rogers said instructional improvements and student achievement will be top priorities and that she plans to meet with staff during the summer.
Rogers, who has 23 years of education experience, spent the past two at her post in Roanoke. Prior to that, she worked in a similar capacity in Bedford County.
She has a bachelor’s degree in English and journalism from Lynchburg College, a master’s degree in administration and supervision, and doctorate in educational leadership, both from University of Virginia.
Rogers said the position and the school system were “a good fit.”
“It feels like coming home,” she said.
Rogers lives in Bedford County and has a daughter at Forest Middle School.
Lineburg, who was not present at Thursday’s meeting, also has a rich education background. In addition to serving as Radford principal, he is an adjunct professor at Virginia Tech.
He has a bachelor’s degree in social studies and history from Radford University, a master’s degree in administration and supervision from Lynchburg College, and a doctorate in educational leadership and policy studies from Virginia Tech.
