A 19-year-old Florida man was killed and three others injured in an early-morning car accident Sunday along the Smith Mountain Lake Parkway in Huddleston, according to Virginia State Police.

William Bradford Sowers, from Wesley Chapel, Fla., was driving a 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt at about 2:25 a.m. Sunday when he lost control of the vehicle as it traveled around a curve at a high rate of speed, said Sgt. Bob Carpentieri.

The car ran off the right side of the roadway about a mile south of Gateway Bend Lane, Carpentieri said, and struck a tree.

Sowers, who was wearing a seat belt, was transported to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, where he died about four hours later, Carpentieri said.

Three other passengers in the vehicle were transported to Lynchburg General Hospital, Carpentieri said, but he was unaware of their names or the extent of their injuries.

The cause of the crash remains under investivation, he said.
