Bedford County, City officials support changing city to town

»  Comments | Post a Comment

City of Bedford and Bedford County officials were publicly united Tuesday in supporting reverting the city to a town.

Bedford Mayor Skip Tharp said reasons the city is studying such a change are to ease tax burdens and streamline services between both localities.

“I don’t think there is anyone here who wants to pay more taxes,” Tharp said Tuesday at a town hall meeting at Liberty Lake Park.

Supervisor Dale Wheeler said the city, which announced its intentions a few months ago, should be applauded since it could have moved ahead in its reversion talks without including the county.

“The city is looking for a win-win on both sides,” Wheeler said.

No official votes or decisions have yet been made to formalize the reversion. Tharp said both sides are still talking.

“This is not just an automatic blending of our two governments,” he said. “It’s a process.”
