Chlorine fumes sent four people, including three juveniles, to the hospital after a piece of pool equipment at a Liberty University pool malfunctioned late Thursday morning.
According to Deputy Fire Marshal David Jackson, a container holding chlorine tablets turned upside down after it was caught in a pool skimmer at Liberty’s east campus outdoor pool.
The water left in the device continued to dissolve the tablets, but in its upside-down state, the chlorine released itself into the air instead of the pool.
Jackson said Lynchburg rescue workers received the emergency call at 11:36 a.m., and took the children to Lynchburg General Hospital as a precaution. They were complaining of sore throats and some difficulty breathing.
Jackson said it was fortunate that the pool was outside. If the incident had happened in an unventilated area, he said, the result could have been much worse.
