A fire left an Altavista couple homeless Monday morning.
A house on U.S. 29, about four miles north of Altavista, caught fire shortly before 11:30 a.m., said Aubrey Cheatham, Campbell County’s director of public safety.
A passer-by on U.S. 29 spotted the fire and called it in, he said. Altavista and Evington volunteer fire departments responded. One lane of U.S. 29 south was shut down while firefighters battled the blaze.
Doug Eggleston, of the Historic Virginia Chapter of the American Red Cross, said the couple who lived in the house was insured.
They were not home when the blaze started.
The couple is being provided with a hotel stay and some food.
“They have already called their insurance company,” Eggleston said.
Cheatham said the fire started in the kitchen, but what sparked it has not yet been determined.
The fire is the third in the area since Saturday. Another in Campbell County on Sunny Meade Road destroyed a family’s home Sunday.
On Saturday, a brush fire spread to the Maple Ridge Apartment building, displacing 19 people.
