Bedford County and the city of Bedford’s joint tourism office is sponsoring a contest to recognize National Tourism Week, which starts today.
It encourages individuals to visit at least five sites in the Bedford area to search for clues. The prize includes a gift basket with items produced in Bedford representing the area’s sites.
The sites include the National D-Day Memorial, The Bedford Academy for the Arts, Thomas Jefferson’s Poplar Forest, the Bedford City/County Museum, and all five wineries that make up the Bedford Wine Trail.
The contest runs from today to May 18.
Forms and further details are available at the Bedford Area Welcome Center at 816 Burks Hill Road.
Tourism is an important draw for the area’s economy, said Sergei Troubetzkoy, director of tourism in Bedford. The industry creates spending of $74 million annually in the county and city, according to the Virginia Tourism Corporation.
In 2006, Bedford’s tax receipts generated by tourism were close to $2.5 million and state taxes collected as a result of tourism in the Bedford area were close to $3.7 million.
