Kaine: 'Old Virginny' is dead

»  Comments | Post a Comment

A tired but beaming Gov. Timothy M. Kaine today said the election of Sen. Barack Obama was "an amazing day -- one of the best days of our lives."

"Old Virginny is dead," said Kaine, standing with his wife, Anne Holton, in front of the Virginia Civil Rights Memorial at the State Capitol. "We are a new and dynamic and exciting commonwealth . . .

"We are not living in the past," Kaine said. "We are looking ahead."

Kaine, an early backer of Obama and a national co-chairman of his campaign, said the Illinois senator's win in Virginia demonstrates that "if you a problem solver and try to get people together Virginians will reward that."

Kaine spoke of the idea of "racial reconciliation" that the governor and his wife have pursued in their private and public lives.

"This is personally so gratifying to me," Kaine said. "It's really been my mission in life."

Kaine acknowledged that "there were a lot of doubters that Virginia would turn blue in this election" but trumpeted the state's new political reality.
